Position Description:

The University of Washington (UW) is recruiting for a full-time Assistant, Associate or Full Professor WOT (without tenure due to funding) in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Department of Medicine. Specific rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications as generally described in UW’s Faculty Code Section 24-34. This position is based at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) and employment is paid directly by the VA.

University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. Clinical responsibilities will include both inpatient and outpatient activities at the VA Puget Sound, and will be involved in working with and teaching trainees in these settings. Clinical work will include attending on the medical intensive care unit and pulmonary consultation service, and outpatient pulmonary clinic. VAPSHCS is a Level 1a major interdisciplinary teaching healthcare system with two divisions and multiple community-based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is considered the most complex VA healthcare system nationwide. VAPSHCS has Emergency services and a full complement of specialty medical, surgical, psychiatric, critical care, and rehabilitation service-lines. It is also one of the 3 VA centers in the US to have a lung transplant program.

Time allocated to clinical work will be commensurate with the academic track. For physician-scientists, clinical time is expected to be 25% FTE or more, depending on grant funding to allow protected time for research. Administrative responsibilities could include medical directorship of one or more of our various pulmonary critical care programs.

The selected candidate will be expected to have a research program that aligns with the mission of the VA to improve the health and health care of Veterans, and to participate in mentoring of physician-scientists and other trainees. Successful health services researchers would be eligible to become an investigator in the Seattle-Denver Center of Innovation for Veteran-Centered and Value-Driven Care (COIN). Investigators in the COIN conduct outstanding health services research that promotes Veteran-centered and value-driven care, generate and disseminate knowledge that contributes to the well-being of Veterans, partner with operational leaders to implement research findings into clinical care and train the next generation of health services researchers and leaders.

Assistant professors WOT are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1–June 30). Associate and full professors WOT hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). The successful candidate will be a VA staff physician with a faculty appointment at UW.

The anticipated start date of this position is August 2026 or later.

This position is paid directly by VAPSHCS and receives no UW compensation. Please refer to VAPSHCS for information about compensation for this position.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, the candidate must meet the basic requirements below as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement by the VA. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Applicants must have the following basic requirements as per VA hiring requirements:

1. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens (permanent residents may be appointed only if it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens). Degree of doctor of medicine or foreign equivalent resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification or foreign equivalent. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English.
