Position description

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California San Diego invites applications for a full-time Researcher in the Oceans and Atmosphere Section. We seek motivated, broad-thinking scientists to develop a vigorous research group and provide intellectual leadership in their field while complementing existing expertise in the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E). The successful candidates will have expertise emphasizing atmospheric rivers (ARs), with methodologies including, but not limited to, field and aircraft campaigns, climatological data analysis, meteorological analysis at local scales, extreme events, global and/or regional climate modeling, polar applications, forecasting and nowcasting, including precipitation and hydrological impacts. The Researcher series at SIO parallels the Professor series in terms of independent research and service, but it carries no teaching requirements. Researchers hired under this announcement are expected to have established an externally funded research program that provides the majority of their salary support. Researchers at SIO often serve as undergraduate and graduate student advisors.

SIO has a long history of research excellence at the forefront of meteorology, climatology and hydrology. We are seeking candidates excited to continue the tradition of excellence in the subject area of ARs and who are qualified to take on a leadership role in CW3E program, with level of leadership commensurate with career level. A key part of this role involves independence, demonstrated by publication of novel scientific findings in forefront journals and leading the conception, organization and execution of research projects. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated a commitment to building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. We are open to hiring at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Researcher levels. Full time residency at UCSD is required for this position.

SIO is a world-renowned center of marine research with approximately 200 principal investigators leading research programs on all aspects of earth, ocean, biological, and atmospheric sciences. SIO is dedicated to advancing belonging, accessibility, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (BAJEDI) for all who are or wish to be members of our community. We welcome candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia. Information about SIO's ongoing diversity efforts may be found here. Successful candidates must demonstrate a commitment to promoting and contributing to BAJEDI in SIO's educational, research, and work environments.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

(required at time of application)

The positions require a PhD in Atmospheric or Climate Sciences or relevant/related fields, and that candidates have a record of publication, as well as evidence of the ability to conduct and fund an active research program consistent with career level. As part of duties and responsibilities, the candidate must demonstrate the ability to obtain extramural funding (i.e. previous experience; well articulated plan of securing extramural funding), and must presently have a funded research program that can be transferred to UCSD.
