Assistant/Associate Professor (EIP Trustworthy AI in the era of Large Language models & AI nexus for Scientific and Engineering Design) - Computer Science, College of Engineering
Stony Brook University’s Department of Computer Science invites applications for multiple tenure-track/tenured assistant and associate professor positions with an expected starting date of Fall 2026. We are interested in candidates with backgrounds in all areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning. We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with expertise in GenAI approaches for programming, AI for science and trustworthy AI. Qualified candidates at the rank of associate professor will be considered for the title of SUNY Empire Innovation Professor. Please note, there will be no EIP designation at the Assistant Professor level.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related discipline, demonstrate a strong record of scholarly achievement with the potential for significant future research impact, and show a clear commitment to teaching and mentoring at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates for the Associate Professor rank must additionally demonstrate an established publication record, success in securing external research funding, and excellence in teaching, mentoring, service, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The Assistant Professor is expected to establish and maintain an independent, productive research program with the goal of securing external funding. They are expected to provide effective teaching, mentor students at all levels, and contribute to service at the University, College and Department levels.
The Associate Professor is expected to lead a high impact, externally funded research program and to demonstrate significant scholarly contributions in their field. They must provide excellence in teaching and mentoring, contribute to service at the University, College and Department levels, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
Stony Brook is making significant investments in AI with the creation of the AI Innovation Institute (AI3) and is partnering with the State of New York and SUNY with initiatives such as Empire AI, SUNY STRIVE for AI, and SUNY-IBM AI Research Alliance. The Department of Computer Science currently has about 60 full-time faculty members and over 2200 students in its undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs combined. The department is either home to or has significant partnerships with several interdisciplinary centers on campus. They include the AI Innovation Institute (AI3), the National Security Institute (NSI), the Center for Visual Computing (CVC), the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) and the Institute of Advanced Computational Science (IACS). Required Qualifications (Assistant Professor):
- PhD. (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science or closely related discipline.
- A demonstrated record of scholarly achievement.
- Potential to secure external research funding.
- A commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
Required Qualifications (Associate Professor):
- Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science or a closely related discipline.
- Possess strong publication record.
- A demonstrated potential to lead an independent, high impact research program.
- A demonstrated record of securing external research funding.
- A record of excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring.
- Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and service.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Background in artificial intelligence or machine learning.
- Expertise in GenAI approaches for programming, AI for science or trustworthy AI.
Candidates considered at the rank of Associate Professor must meet the criteria for appointment at Stony Brook University and may be eligible for designation as a SUNY Empire Innovation Professor, subject to SUNY approval.

This is a tenure-track position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for overtime. In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
