Job Description:
The Department of Counseling and Psychological Studies at Bowie State University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant/Associate professor position to start in August 2025. We are seeking a doctoral- level professional with a background in mental health counseling. Prospective candidates should possess a doctorate degree from a CACREP-approved program and/or have full time experience at the college/university level working in a CACREP approved program prior to July 1, 2013, should have practica or work experience in either higher education, and/or in the community.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching across multiple areas, with a focus on mental health counseling.
  • Prospective candidates should also have a history of publications and interest in research; active scholarship and grantsmanship/fund raising; and expectations of contributing to the program, department, university, and surrounding community.
  • An interest in curriculum instruction and program development; student advisement; assisting with field practica, and collaboration with colleagues is also highly desired.
  • Instructional responsibilities may include teaching graduate courses such as Advanced Techniques in Psychotherapy, Practicum, Counseling Theory & Practice, Drug & Alcohol Counseling, Principles & Philosophy of Counseling, Appraisal, Evaluation, & Assessment. A strong commitment to understanding diversity and cultural proficiency in the field is a plus.
  • The Candidate must be willing to work evenings and some weekends.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate must have a Ph.D. or an Ed.D. in Counseling in the areas of Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and/or Counselor Education and Supervision, or a related area.
  • A history of teaching courses in the specialty area and an active program of teaching and research in school, educational and/or mental health counseling is highly desirable, along with a strong interest in teaching related courses.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to graduate education and provide a record of potential effectiveness in teaching, scholarly research, and community outreach.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 4 years (part or full time) experience in a school/educational setting and/or in higher education preferred
  • Willingness to be flexible in teaching schedule (e.g., evenings, weekends, etc.)
  • Occasional availability for Saturday activities, such as Graduate Student Open Houses; New Student Orientations; In-services; and Special Events
  • Occasional availability for field visits for Practicum or Internship supervision
  • Licensed or licensed eligible in Maryland as a professional counselor
  • Minimum of three (3) professional references, preferably from supervisors, documenting scholarship, program development, student advisement and collaboration with colleagues.
  • A history of research and related publications in refereed journals and/or periodicals.
