Job Summary

The School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P) at Morgan State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Architecture, with a focus on Architectural Design and at least one of the following areas: Design Fundamentals, Sustainable Design, Global Architectural History, and/or Building Materials and Technology. This 9.5-month appointment will be made at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on qualifications and experience.

The position also includes the opportunity to serve as Program Director for the undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Environmental Design program. We seek a visionary and collaborative educator committed to advancing the department’s mission through excellence in teaching, innovative curriculum development, and research or creative practice.

Qualified candidates should demonstrate an interest in the integration of teaching and research within a dynamic, interdisciplinary academic environment. A record of academic or professional achievement is expected, along with the readiness to contribute to the responsibilities of faculty at a Carnegie-designated R2 research institution. Individuals currently working in academic or professional practice are encouraged to apply.

Job Duties

Morgan State University’s Department of Architecture offers a pre-professional Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Environmental Design (AREN) and a professional Master of Architecture (M.Arch)—one of only two accredited architecture programs in Maryland and the only such program located in Baltimore. The department’s curriculum integrates architectural design, history, theory, technology, and professional practice, preparing students for careers in high-quality professional firms as well as for leadership roles in public agencies and the private sector.

In collaboration with its sister programs—Landscape Architecture, City & Regional Planning, and Construction Management—the Department emphasizes an interdisciplinary educational approach, fostering critical thinking, integrated design strategies, and technical precision.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to the mission of the School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P) and Morgan State University, including excellence in teaching, scholarly research or creative work, and service. A strong potential for independent research or creative practice is expected, with a research agenda that aligns with the candidate’s instructional focus areas.

Responsibilities include teaching architectural design studios at the undergraduate and/or graduate level and offering coursework in one or more additional subject areas within the architecture curriculum, such as Design Fundamentals, Sustainable Design, Global Architectural History, or Building Materials and Technology, based on departmental needs.

The successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to integrate professional practice, academic teaching, and scholarly research into a cohesive and impactful academic portfolio.

We seek a visionary and collaborative colleague who will contribute to the ongoing enhancement and expansion of the department’s academic programs and provide leadership as Program Director for the undergraduate Architecture and Environmental Design program.

Qualified candidates must present a record of academic and/or professional achievement, with demonstrated potential to meet the responsibilities of a tenured or tenure-track faculty member at a Carnegie-designated R2 research institution. This includes a commitment to:

  • Innovative and inclusive teaching across architectural design studios and lecture/seminar courses in one or more specialized areas (e.g., sustainable design, architectural history, materials and technology, etc.).
  • Engaged research or creative work that contributes meaningfully to the field of architecture and aligns with the department’s academic mission.

Students in the undergraduate program are also eligible to pursue accelerated 3+2 pathways leading to graduate degrees in architecture, landscape architecture, or city and regional planning.

Candidates with administrative experience or a demonstrated capacity for academic leadership are especially encouraged to apply.

Required Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong record of achievement in professional practice, scholarly publications, conference presentations, creative work, or other discipline-related activities.
