Essential Job Duties:
The Assistant or Associate Professor will advance Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) education while providing college-wide leadership in safety and regulatory compliance. The role integrates teaching, student mentorship, and academic service with comprehensive oversight of safety programs and compliance activities across college operations. Through instruction, internship coordination, advising, and safety leadership, you will prepare students for careers in EHS and strengthen a culture of safety, accountability, and regulatory stewardship throughout the college.
In addition to the core responsibilities of this role, there may be occasional opportunities to take on additional duties. This offers an opportunity to build on your skills, explore new areas, and gain a deeper understanding of the department's operations. Key responsibilities fall into two primary areas outlined below:
Academic Leadership & Student Engagement:
- Teach 8 credit hours annually, including OSHA 30-hour and 40-hour HAZWOPER certification courses and a 3-credit ETM course (e.g., environmental regulations, compliance/auditing, environmental management systems)
- Coordinate the College's Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Internship Program to ensure alignment with ETM degree requirements
- Advise undergraduate ETM students and Environmental Assessment (EA) student projects within area of expertise
- Mentor students pursuing careers in Environmental Health & Safety and related fields
- Serve on department, college, and university committees
- Engage students through student organizations, undergraduate research, and professional society involvement
College Safety & Regulatory Leadership:
- Ensure regulatory compliance across all college activities (on- and off-campus) and serve as liaison with University EH&S
- Oversee safety training, permit management, incident reporting, and compliance requirements
- Promote a positive safety culture, including development of behavior-based safety initiatives and administration of college safety recognition programs
- Chair or co-chair the College Safety Committee and lead safety investigations, audit responses, and safety plan renewals
- Supervise undergraduate EHS interns conducting internal safety audits
- Support onboarding and offboarding of research workspaces (labs, storage areas, greenhouses)
- Develop and deliver field and laboratory safety training for faculty, staff, graduate students, visiting scholars, and research personnel
- Collaborate with faculty to establish safety protocols for courses and extracurricular activities

Minimum Experience/Education:
Master's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or relevant related fields and a minimum of 7 years experience in professional practice of Environmental Health and Safety as related to research labs and/or pilot plant operations, OR PhD degree in a relevant related field and a minimum of 5 years experience in professional practice of Environmental Health and Safety as related to research labs and/or pilot plant operations. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience in professional practice of Environmental Health and Safety as related to research labs and/or pilot plant operations,
- Teaching and/or training experience,
- Demonstrated leadership and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated success implementing behavior-based safety programs
- Knowledge of EHS compliance and safe operations within universities or research facilities (e.g., DOE, USDA, DOD laboratories)
- Proficiency in course/learning management systems and with Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite applications
Required License or Certification:
OSHA 30-hr and 40 hr HAZWOPER certifications, or one of these certifications and demonstrated ability to obtain the other within 3 months of hire.
