POSITION DESCRIPTION
The School of Music in the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Viola to begin September 1, 2026.
Position Number: 43187BR
Appointment: Tenure track, beginning fall 2026

MAJOR/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
In line with TTU’s strategic priorities to engage and empower a dynamic student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with a breadth of student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.
As a faculty member in the School of Music, you will be expected to:
- Teach applied lessons in viola performance and chamber music at graduate and undergraduate levels.
- Recruit and retain a full studio of talented graduate and undergraduate violists to programs within the string area, School of Music and College of Visual and Performing Arts
- Regularly attend student performances and recitals and responsibly mentor students toward on-time degree completion.
- Direct graduate and undergraduate student research and coordinate teaching assistants
- Continue to build and sustain a significant performance and research profile.
- Provide service to the community, school, college, and university via service on committees, outreach, and engagement.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:
- Demonstrated ability to recruit and retain a talented and appropriately sized studio of undergraduate and graduate viola students
- Ability to teach a variety of string and music-related subjects, including graduate-level courses in literature and pedagogy, as well as mixed chamber music, and other courses in music
- Experience teaching applied viola at the university level
- Record of involvement with outreach and engagement activities
