The Department of Radiation Oncology of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, ranked top 5th in NIH research funding, is recruiting for a Radiation Oncologist at the Assistant/Associate/Professor level. The department provides Radiation Oncology services at several practice settings and has a need for a full-time faculty physician scientist. The ideal candidate will have a track record of continuous and/or renewal of extramural/industry funding and have an active clinical practice. Based on the candidate's experience, the opportunity to hold a departmental leadership position, such as Vice-Chair, could be made available.

This faculty position will provide strategic vision for our department's research/clinical trial efforts endeavors. These include an opportunity with our Division of Translational Radiation Sciences [DTRS], with a distinguished history of achievement and grant/contract funding in cellular responses to DNA damage, development of original preclinical models of radiation effects on normal tissue, and medical countermeasures research; and the collaborative translational efforts of our large Medical Physics team, noted for introduction of innovative technologies and standard setting in quality assurance measures. An equal opportunity exists in leading our collaborative and rapidly developing theranostics program as a clinical trialist. The position will also work closely with our nationally recognized clinical research team and participate in providing patient care at the Maryland Proton Treatment Center.

The Department of Radiation Oncology's clinical program has twenty (20) physicians. There is a prospect that we may offer professional services in other locations in the future. Our current clinical program has fourteen (14) linear accelerators, a research linear accelerator, eight (8) multi-slice large bore CT simulators, a proton center with four (4) active treatment rooms, GammaPod, five (5) HDR units, an MRI and active programs in Hyperthermia Therapy, Brachytherapy, SRS/SBRT, radiopharmaceuticals and Radio-embolization. There are several campus-wide shared resources including small-animal imaging CT, PET and MR scanners. There are twelve (12) medical residents and three (3) medical physics residents.

Medical Physics led by Dr. Amit Sawant, has thirty three (33) medical physics faculty, twenty six (26) dosimetrists, three (3) physics residents, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and six (6) information systems and technology staff. All practice sites are connected via a state-of-the-art telemedicine network facilitating interactions between faculty and staff. Research programs include the development of new treatment planning and delivery techniques, tumor motion management, inter-fraction image guidance strategies, two SARRPs and research vaults dedicated to photon and proton related research. The division of medical physics has research space co-located with DTRS. The department occupies >20,000 sq. ft. of purpose-built, fully renovated, access-controlled wet laboratory, animal research and dry lab space for successful execution of translational radiobiological/physics research.
