Assistant/Associate Professor - Vascular Surgery (Springfield) - SMS-3575
The Division of Vascular Surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is seeking a Vascular Surgeon at the Assistant/Associate Professor level, depending on experience and academic record, to join our academic vascular surgery division.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will have a broad range of open and endovascular skills, an interest in teaching vascular surgery residents and medical students, and a commitment to an academic career path. Qualified applicants interested in serving as Program Director of the Vascular Surgery Residency are desired. The Division practices at two 500-bed hospitals located in Springfield and an affiliated 300-bed hospital in Decatur, IL. Educational facilities, an outpatient clinic, and outpatient vascular laboratory are on the same campus of one facility in Springfield. Practice opportunities are diverse, spanning the full spectrum of vascular disorders and their diagnosis and management. Operating endovascular suites are available to facilitate advanced endovascular procedures at all three hospitals, and ambulatory procedures are performed in our outpatient facility. The Division also directs an ICAVL inpatient and outpatient Vascular Ultrasound Lab. In addition, division faculty practice in three hospital-based wound centers, which provide ample opportunities for clinical activity in CLTI and diabetic foot disease.
SIU has a rich academic history in vascular surgery and a long-standing commitment to surgical education. The Division of Vascular Surgery has an integrated vascular residency which has been accredited since 2011. There is a strong and supportive relationship with our primary hospital, and a newly opened state-of-the-art facility for advanced simulation and education is available for teaching and research. Research opportunities are abundant. There is strong outcomes research collaboration between the university and our primary hospital, positioning us well for future healthcare changes and academic productivity. We have a strong collaboration with the SIU Center for Clinical Research, which provides expertise in clinical research and clinical trials, including statistics, database analysis, and management for outcomes research. There are also facilities and collaborators for basic or translational research. The section of Vascular Surgery and Department of Surgery are fully committed to providing support for a candidate's academic interests. Administration 20%: Serve as Program Director of the Vascular Integrated Residency, including the administration of the residency, selection of trainees, and other administrative duties related to maintenance of the training program.
Research 10%: Be productive with a research commitment in the Department of Surgery/Division of Vascular Surgery. Independent research will be maintained, as well as collaborative research on projects with the Division Chair, other members of Vascular Surgery, and other faculty in the Department of Surgery and the School of Medicine. In carrying out these research duties, the incumbent will participate in the utilization of the computerized database for vascular surgery at both hospitals and SIU School of Medicine, organize prospective and retrospective clinical research projects, seek outside grant funds, publish in refereed journals, deliver lectures at meetings, and maintain current literature files.
Teaching 10%: Assume an active role in teaching medical students, residents, nursing, and laboratory staffs. Teaching duties will include rounds, lectures, clinics, ward work, and activities in the operating room and laboratories. In performing these duties, the incumbent will assist in the vascular surgery education of medical students, present curriculum, participate in the development of undergraduate curricula, sponsor continuing medical education programs, and teach students and residents about vascular diseases.
Service 55%: Maintain a clinical practice and participate in local/community service, university/school service, and service in national, regional, and state professional organizations related to surgery and vascular surgery. In performing these duties, the incumbent will set an example as a skilled practitioner, maintain a practice of vascular surgery, assist in reading duplex scans, attend national meetings, present papers, serve on committees, and prepare continuing medical education materials.
Qualifications: Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations; successful completion of a vascular surgery residency; Board-Certified or Board-Eligible in vascular surgery; MD license; able to be licensed in the State of Illinois. Candidates appointed at the level of Associate Professor and/or filling the role of Program Director will be expected to have at least 3 years of clinical experience after completion of postgraduate training.
