Position description
The Neuroscience Department at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant/Associate Project Scientist in the Gallant Lab, in the area of computational cognitive neuroscience, with a focus on individual differences and clinical applications of neuroimaging methods.
The Gallant Lab develops and applies computational models to understand how the human brain represents and processes complex perceptual and conceptual information. The lab's ongoing research programs include investigation of individual differences in multimodal conceptual brain representations in both healthy individuals and patients. These projects involve large-scale neuroimaging data collection at 3T and 7T, computational modeling of brain responses using machine learning methods, and cross-institutional clinical collaborations. The successful candidate will contribute to these efforts, and will design and execute fMRI experiments, apply voxelwise encoding models, and develop novel computational methods to analyze the rich fMRI datasets collected in the lab.
The position will contribute to four major areas:
- designing, executing, and analyzing functional MRI experiments using naturalistic stimuli at both 3T and 7T;
- developing and optimizing fMRI pulse sequences;
- developing and applying computational methods and machine learning approaches to characterize individual differences in brain representations;
- contributing to cross-institutional clinical neuroimaging research.
Responsibilities also include authoring manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, presenting research at national and international conferences, contributing to grant proposals, mentoring graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in computational neuroimaging methods, developing and maintaining open-source scientific software for neuroimaging analysis, and coordinating multi-site data collection efforts.
Qualifications

At least five years post PhD research experience
Preferred qualifications
- PhD in neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, computational neuroscience, or a related quantitative field.
- Demonstrated expertise in functional MRI data acquisition, preprocessing, and analysis, including experience with fMRI pulse sequence optimization.
- Demonstrated expertise in machine learning methods.
- Experience with clinical neuroimaging research, particularly in neurodegenerative diseases such as frontotemporal dementia or Alzheimer's disease.
- Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, including first-author publications in the areas of computational neuroscience, neuroimaging, or cognitive neuroscience.
- Proficiency in Python programming for scientific computing, including experience developing and maintaining open-source neuroimaging software.
- Experience mentoring graduate students or postdoctoral researchers in computational neuroimaging methods.
