Position Purpose: To participate as part of a decision-making team (coaching staff) under the direction of the head coach in planning, coaching, recruiting, administering, and promoting the Men's Lightweight Rowing program within EARC, Ivy League and NCAA and institutional standards. The Assistant Coach plays a critical role in achieving the overall goals of the Men's Lightweight Rowing program by providing important recommendations, suggestions, and decisions regarding game strategies, line-ups, priority listing of recruits, etc., as well as offering initiative and independent judgment (e.g., in providing coaching instruction, evaluating, and communicating with prospective recruits and their parents, and representing the Men's Lightweight Rowing program to constituents).
Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp: Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Six years' experience coaching and /or participating in competitive rowing. Strong knowledge of rowing skills, strategies, and physical training methods. Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of people in a diverse community. Strong organizational skills. Ability to recruit effectively with no athletic grants and highly selective admissions standards. Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community.
Coaching and Mentoring
Contributes to planning and implementing the conditioning, training, and coaching programs for the lightweight rowing team. Assists head coach in conducting team practices, training, conditioning, and competitions. Prepares scouting reports and game plans for opponents. During competitions, makes recommendations to the head coach regarding adjustments to game plans and line-ups. Teaches rowing skills to student-athletes during team practices, games, and individual/small group training sessions. Evaluates performance of athletes and offers technical, strategic, and mental instruction and advice. Demonstrates a sincere interest in the academic, personal, and physical welfare of each student-athlete, counsels team members, and consults with the head coach and appropriate College staff as necessary for the resolution of issues. Independently seeks and develops new training concepts and sport-specific knowledge to enhance the overall knowledge of the coaching staff. (55% of time)
Recruiting
Assists head coach in developing and implementing an overall recruiting plan, including identifying qualified students and talented athletes; communicating with prospects by phone, mail, e-mail; traveling to evaluate prospects, meet parents and high school coaches; organizing and participating in visits to campus by prospects. Maintains appropriate recruiting records as required by the EARC, Ivy League and NCAA. Maintains knowledge of the College's programs and opportunities to effectively inform prospects. (30% of time)
Administration
Knows and complies with the rules and regulations of the EARC, Ivy League and NCAA and works to stay abreast of rule changes, applications and interpretations; actively seeks to ensure that athletes and athletics representatives are informed of and comply with EARC, Ivy League and NCAA rules. Provides input in planning and administering the budget for the lightweight rowing program, which includes assessing needs for equipment, team travel, recruiting etc. Plans and reconciles recruiting and team travel expenses. Assists head coach in planning and developing competitive schedule. Assists head coach in coordinating team travel plans. Communicates with alumni, parents, and other supporters regarding status of the program. (10% of time)
Other
Assists head coach in promoting Dartmouth and the rowing program through camps, clinics, and community involvement. Develops and maintains positive relationships with a wide range of constituents, including students, parents, faculty, department and College staff, alumni, fans, community members, the media, etc. Represents Dartmouth, the athletics department, and the rowing program in an exemplary fashion. Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others. Performs other duties as assigned. (5% of time)
