Assistant Controller
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Division of Business and Finance supports the instructional, research and public service activities of ECSU by providing sound and prudent leadership in the management of fiscal and physical resources, ensuring regulatory compliance, and providing timely delivery of services to faculty, staff, students and other constituents of the university.
Description of Work
The Assistant Controller works under the guidance and direction of the Controller and is responsible for assisting with the overall management of the accounting department. The Assistant Controller will supervise mid-level managers and accountants, which includes the director of financial reporting, accounts payable, travel, payroll manager and other staff as designated by the Controller. This position will coordinate and perform a full range of financial, accounting and analytical duties to ensure the effective operation of the accounting department and the fiscal integrity of the university. The position could be responsible for one or several areas of accounting, including cash receipting, grants management, policies and procedures and other related functions as designated by the Controller.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
Expert knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
A thorough knowledge of financial reporting practices in higher education.
Sound and well developed administrative and management skills.
Hands on ability to prepare financial statements that require minimal audit adjustments.
Hands on ability to solve complex problems and financial problems.
Thorough knowledge of governmental auditing principles and practices.
Ability to recruit, train, and motivate personnel.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Thorough knowledge of Banner accounting systems or other major ERP systems.
Minimum Training and Experience
Graduation from a four-year college/university with a degree in Accounting or related field with 12 semester hours in Accounting. Five years progressive accounting experience required. Master’s degree (MBA/Accounting) and/or CPA is preferred.
