Job Description

The Assistant Dean for Clinical and Experiential Education provides leadership and vision with respect to the College of Law's Department of Clinical & Experiential Education and is responsible for maintaining the academic integrity, coordination, and compliance with accreditation standards for clinical and experiential education courses. The Assistant Dean for Clinical and Experiential Education will work closely with faculty to develop, implement, and evaluate clinical and experiential offerings at the College of Law. The Assistant Dean for Clinical and Experiential Education will facilitate continuing education, development opportunities, and student-focused trainings for faculty clinicians and supervise adjunct faculty assigned to teach clinical and experiential courses. The Assistant Dean for Clinical and Experiential Education will facilitate continuing education and other development opportunities for on-campus and off-campus clinicians.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

Employment duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the overall development, implementation, and evaluation of the College of Law's clinic and externship courses, collaborating with other members of the faculty who teach externship and clinic courses.
  • Responsible for facilitating continuing education and other development opportunities for on-campus and off-campus clinicians. These opportunities may include, as appropriate, e.g., national (AALS and/or CLEA) or regional conferences, mentoring groups, and service/leadership opportunities; on-campus round table discussions regarding best practices in clinical education and other updates on clinical teaching scholarship or pedagogy; seminar development; and/or clinical "rounds" on issues drawn from teaching and supervision.
  • Responsible for overseeing opportunities for on-campus and off-campus clinics to coordinate student-focused trainings, orientation sessions, outreach and interactive forums on clinical opportunities and ongoing clinical experiences, and periodic social activities and networking events that facilitate engagement with faculty and mentors.
  • Responsible for maintaining academic integrity by establishing objectives and assessment procedures for clinical courses, regularly evaluating existing and potential clinic and externship courses, and evaluating and recommending policies and procedures (including risk management and liability) for clinics and externships.
  • Collaborate with externship and clinic faculty members to ensure that students receive a quality educational experience.
  • Draft and monitor performance under agreements between the College of Law and the partnering organizations who provide clinical and externship placements.
  • Ensure compliance with ABA Standards and Interpretations, and other accreditation standards, related to clinic and externship courses.
  • Provide input to the Dean, Associate Deans, and faculty on matters relating to clinical and experiential education.
  • Implement changes to the Department to address the Next Gen Bar exam and need for student training.
  • Develop in-class on-campus teaching modules to address Next Gen Bar, and substantive needs for each clinic and externship.
  • Oversee and develop curricular innovation with Experiential Fellows addressing three substantive areas related to clinics and externships.
  • Implement changes to address the growing opportunity within the State of Florida for expansion of C.L.I. opportunities for students.
  • Develop an introductory curriculum for first-time clinic students, such as bootcamps, midsemester assessment roundtable discussions and end of the semester assessments.
  • Develop an advanced curriculum for upper-level clinic students who enroll in multiple clinics, such as advanced clinical pedagogy assignments addressing foundational principles.
  • Attend national and regional conferences related to clinical education and assist with more engagement by clinic professors in presenting nationally to promote work.
  • Provide innovative leadership in clinical and experiential education.
  • Monitor trends in legal education to ensure that the College of Law provides excellence in experiential education for students through clinics and externships.
  • Responsible for oversight of the external clinics, including but not limited to training, supervising, and evaluating adjunct professors; monitor clinic student experience to ensure that students receive a quality experience; and conduct site visits, as needed, to clinic and externship placements.
  • Teach and supervise the General Skills Externship Course and one other course per academic semester, in consultation with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
  • Provides leadership and supervision to the Assistant Director of Clinical Education, Clinic Fellow and Teaching Assistants.
  • Oversees the administrative functions of the Department, including but not limited to developing, proposing, and monitoring the budget for the department; maintaining current and accurate information about each clinic and externship course; coordinating the application process for clinics and externships; disseminating information about clinics and externships through meetings, publications, website, individual counseling, and social media; coordinating with other College of Law departments regarding clinics and externships; preparing reports and questionnaires requiring data about clinical education; and assisting with fundraising and development initiatives related to clinical education as requested by the Dean.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

This position requires:

  • Required credentials include a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school, must be a licensed attorney in good standing, and have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in teaching and developing clinics and externships.
  • Must be able to work with varied constituencies, including faculty, students, administration, the judiciary, and the practicing bar. Demonstrated ethical behavior, professionalism, leadership, and management abilities.
  • Must have a collaborative work and leadership style, with a capacity to cultivate and build relationships.
  • Superior interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including maturity and diplomacy.
  • The ability to juggle multiple competing priorities successfully.
  • Excellent judgment, discretion, and professionalism.
  • The flexibility and commitment to periodically work long and/or irregular hours.
  • Maintains confidentiality. Must be a dependable, responsible contributor committed to the excellence and success of Stetson University College of Law.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

The ideal candidate's qualifications include:

  • Previous experience overseeing experiential education.
  • At minimum five years experience as a faculty member and teaching in a clinical setting.

Work Environment:

  • Routinely work in an office setting during normal hours of operation for university offices.
  • Will require some travel to field offices.

Work authorization sponsorship may be available for this position. However, sponsorship is contingent upon the non-applicability of the visa petition fees outlined in the relevant Executive Order signed September 19, 2025. Due to the recent federally-mandated increased financial expense, the university is not in a position to absorb this significantly increased cost of sponsorship for new H-1B petitions at this time.
