Job Summary/Basic Function
The Assistant Director for Intramural Sports and Esports is responsible for the leadership, planning, implementation, assessment, and strategic growth of comprehensive intramural sports and esports programs within Campus Recreation. This position provides program-specific leadership and serves as a key support to the Associate Director for Campus Recreation in advancing student engagement and development through recreational sport offerings.The Assistant Director is responsible for creating innovative and responsive programming that meets the needs of a diverse student population while ensuring effective operations, risk management, and staff supervision. The position requires the ability to perform independently during variable work hours, including evenings and weekends.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in sports management, recreation, physical education, student personnel or closely related field and a minimum of 2 years' experience operating and managing a comprehensive intramural program to include training sports officials or other sports management experience. Or an Associates Degree in sports management, recreation, physical education, student personnel or closely related field and a minimum of 4 years' experience operating and managing a comprehensive intramural program to include training sports officials or other sports management experience.
- Experience supervising staff and/or students
- Strong interpersonal skills working with students, staff, and faculty.
- Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with other individuals and departments on campus and in the surrounding community.
- Ability to work independently in setting priorities to ensure that responsibilities are carried out in an accurate and timely fashion.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating and managing a comprehensive intramural program to include training sports officials or other sports management experience.
- At least one year of competitive esports experience involving multiplayer online video games with team-based elements and knowledge of League of Legends, Overwatch, Hearthstone, or similar games.
- 2 years of professional experience operating and managing a comprehensive intramural sports program; and officiating certification at the high school level in a major sport.
- Knowledge of the fundamentals and techniques of esports obtained through previous experience coaching at the high school and/or college level.
Essential Functions and percent of time
Program Leadership (45%)
- Provide leadership for the development, management, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of comprehensive intramural sports and esports programming.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of intramural sports and esports programs, including marketing, league scheduling, payroll processes, and supervision of student staff.
- Develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and sport-specific rules for intramural sports and esports in alignment with Campus Recreation and university guidelines.
- Maintain accurate records related to participation, league standings, sportsmanship, and program outcomes for assessment and reporting purposes.
- Research, evaluate, and propose new leagues, tournaments, and special events based on student feedback, participation trends, facility availability, and emerging best practices.
- Provide leadership for the esports program, including outreach to current and prospective students and the development of systems and guidelines governing daily operations.
- Collaborate with the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct to manage disciplinary processes related to participation in intramural sports and esports activities.
- Assist with the design and coordination of intramural and esports calendars and schedules.
- Collaborate with other Campus Recreation program areas to support integrated programming, shared initiatives, and campus-wide engagement efforts.
Strategy and Student Development (40%)
- Analyze participation data and assessment findings to inform program improvements, operational decisions, and strategic planning efforts.
- Lead program-level strategic planning for intramural sports and esports, including short- and long-term goals, expansion opportunities, and resource considerations.
- Collaborate with the Associate Director for Campus Recreation in budget planning by providing data, projections, and programmatic recommendations; monitor expenditures within assigned program areas.
- Assist with the development and implementation of marketing and outreach strategies to enhance awareness, participation, and engagement.
- Conduct program evaluations and administer surveys to assess student needs, participation trends, and overall program effectiveness.
- Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, mentor, and evaluate 40+ undergraduate student employees, including supervisors, officials, and intramural assistant.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive staffing and training plan that emphasizes leadership development, professionalism, inclusivity, and transferable skill acquisition for student employees.
- Provide intentional student development through mentorship, performance feedback, and leadership opportunities aligned with Student Affairs learning outcomes and career readiness competencies.
- Serve as the primary risk manager for assigned program areas and assist with the assessment, evaluation, and mitigation of risk associated with intramural sports and esports programs and facilities.
- Participate in divisional initiatives, working groups, and committees as assigned to support student engagement, wellness, and co-curricular learning.
Facility and Equipment Management (10%)
- Coordinate scheduling, daily operations, and maintenance needs for the esports room.
- Collaborate with Computing and Telecommunication Services (CaTS) to support technology needs, troubleshooting, and long-term planning for esports infrastructure.
- Coordinate field maintenance and painting schedules in collaboration with facilities and campus partners.
- Monitor equipment condition, inventory levels, and replacement needs for intramural sports and esports programs.
- Coordinate facility needs for intramural sports leagues, tournaments, and special events with internal and external partners.
- Ensure participant safety by monitoring environmental conditions and adherence to safety protocols across all areas of oversight.

- Perform other duties as assigned in support of Campus Recreation and divisional goals.
