Job Description

The Magnetic Resonance Center (MRC) at Boston College seeks a qualified individual to fill the position of Assistant Director (AD). The MRC currently maintains three Varian/Agilent VNMRS spectrometers (at 400, 500 and 600 MHz), two Bruker NEO systems (at 500 MHz, with helium and Prodigy CryoProbes and autosamplers), and two Bruker EPR spectrometers: an X-band EMX-Plus, and a bench-top ESR-5000. The AD will primarily be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the two EPR spectrometers, as well as training users and supporting an array of research projects that specifically utilize EPR.

The AD is also expected to support the Director of the MRC by assisting with general systems, network, and day-to-day instrument maintenance as well as service and repair efforts, while being responsible for the smooth operation of the facility in the Director's absence. The individual in this position should possess excellent communication skills to deal with vendors, and also support the faculty, students, and postdoctoral researchers that utilize the MRC at Boston College.

  • MS or PhD in a relevant physical science field is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with magnetic resonance is required; a background in EPR is essential.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience with lab/facility management is strongly preferred.
  • Having a detailed understanding and hands-on experience in troubleshooting magnetic resonance instrumentation, familiarity with current software, and the ability to maintain daily laboratory operations is fundamental to the job.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and training skills are also crucial when supporting the diverse body of users at the university.
