Summary
The Assistant Director reports to the Director and works collaboratively with Career Excellence colleagues, University partners, alumni, employers, and other external constituents to advance the career readiness and post-graduate success of St. Lawrence students.
The position supports the Center's career readiness and programming efforts by supporting employer and career-related alumni engagement activities, expanding career-connected experiences, and helping students develop and articulate the skills necessary for successful transitions to internships, employment, and other post-graduate opportunities. As a member of a collaborative and cross-functional team, the Assistant Director also contributes to career coaching, student programming, assessment, technology, and strategic initiatives based on Center priorities and student needs.
Responsibilities may evolve over time in response to Center priorities, student needs, staffing, institutional priorities, and emerging trends in career education and the workforce.
Career Coaching & Student Development
- Provide individual career coaching to students across class years, majors, identities, and career interests. Assist students with career exploration, internship and job searches, resumes and cover letters, networking, interviewing, graduate school preparation, offer evaluation, and transition to the workplace. Help students identify, develop, and articulate transferable and career-ready skills gained through academic, co-curricular, employment, internship, research, and other experiences. Support students in effectively using career technology and resources, including Handshake, VMock, LinkedIn, and other platforms. Incorporate current employer expectations, recruiting trends, artificial intelligence, and changing workplace practices into student coaching and career preparation.
Programs & Career-Connected Experiences
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop and deliver career education programs, workshops, employer events, networking opportunities, and other initiatives that support student career readiness. Contribute to the development and implementation of career-connected experiences, including internships, micro-internships, employer projects, job shadows, experiential learning opportunities, and other initiatives responsive to student and employer needs. Manage the On-Campus Internship Program and collaborate with campus departments to develop and strengthen on-campus paid experiential opportunities for students. Coordinate the SLU PIC summer internship program and support its continued development, including opportunities with nonprofit organizations, local small businesses, entrepreneurs, and other community partners. Support execution of programming as directed including Saints Accelerate, SLU Connect, and LINC. Participate in and support Center programs and initiatives; assist with university programs as needed.
Operations, Assessment & Strategic Initiatives
- Participate in Center-wide projects and assessment and assume leadership for designated programs or initiatives based on expertise, staffing needs, departmental priorities, and evolving opportunities. Serve as a primary Center resource and vendor liaison for designated career technology platforms, including Handshake and VMock; maintain expertise in platform functionality and support their effective use by students, colleagues, employers, and campus partners, as appropriate. Collaborate across functional areas and provide coverage for career coaching, programming, employer engagement, events, and other Center responsibilities as needed, allowing the position to respond flexibly to changing student and departmental needs. Perform other duties as assigned to advance departmental and University goals.
Professional Development
- Maintain knowledge of emerging practices and trends in career education, employer recruiting and hiring, artificial intelligence and technology, experiential learning, and the changing workforce. Share relevant trends, resources, and promising practices with Center colleagues and campus partners.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and relevant professional experience in career services, higher education, employer relations, recruiting, human resources, student development, alumni engagement, experiential education, or a related field. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain productive relationships with students, employers, alumni, faculty, staff, and other internal and external constituents. Experience providing advising, coaching, programming, relationship management, recruitment, or comparable client-facing services. Knowledge of career readiness, workforce trends, recruiting practices, or student career development. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. Strong interpersonal, organizational, analytical, program development, presentation, and project management skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team. Demonstrated commitment to supporting students with a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, interests, and career goals. Ability to provide exceptional service and maintain a high level of professionalism with internal and external constituents. Proficiency with commonly used workplace technology and willingness to learn career management and career development platforms.

Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, business, HR, student affairs, or a related field.
Experience in collegiate career services, employer relations, recruiting, alumni engagement, experiential education, human resources, or a related environment.
Experience with career management or career development platforms such as Handshake, VMock, Vault, LinkedIn, or similar systems.
Experience developing programs, partnerships, or career-connected opportunities for college students.
