Assistant Director of Financial Reporting - Foundations
Primary Purpose of Position
The Assistant Director of Financial Reporting – Foundations provides strategic, technical, and operational leadership for all accounting, reporting, and governance functions related to the University’s associated entities, endowment administration, and investment activity.
This position ensures accuracy, transparency, and compliance across foundation and investment accounting; coordinates directly with the University’s outsourced investment management and custodial service providers; and serves as the University’s lead accounting liaison with external advisors and auditors.
The Assistant Director works closely with the University Reporting, Operations, Budget, and Advancement teams to ensure consistent financial integration, accurate consolidation, and adherence to the University’s Investment Policy Statement ( IPS ) and Investment Management Agreement ( IMA ).
The Assistant Director is responsible for administering and directing the operations of the financial reporting unit to maintain and enhance the internal control system to ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines. This position involves internal control and judgment in decision-making based on the goals of the organization and effective management of the business and financial accounting/reporting, management of day-to-day activities, and providing guidance in the managerial decision-making process. The Assistant Director must plan, organize and implement overall daily operations to ensure meeting targeted goals and deadlines of the organization within the guidelines of generally accepted accounting principles and policies and procedures of the organization. The quality and timeliness of work impact the effectiveness of the program and the image of the organization.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Financial Reporting Department is a unit of the Controller’s Office and provides current, comprehensive, and accurate information to provide accountability and transparency to the University, the people of North Carolina, and beyond concerning its fiduciary resources.
Minimum Requirements
- Mid- to late-career with a Master’s degree and 2- 4 yrs accounting or financial management experience; Bachelor’s and 3-5 yrs accounting or financial management experience.
- Knowledge of higher-education and investment accounting principles ( GASB, GAAP, UPMIFA ).
- Experience preparing or reviewing audited financial statements and reconciliations for multiple entities.
- Experience in FASB financial reporting or Foundation fiscal management preferred
- Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
- CPA, MBA, or Master’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Experience managing outsourced accounting engagements and investment data integrations.
- Familiarity with UNC System financial reporting and associated-entity governance.
- Proficiency with Banner, Raiser’s Edge, Fundriver, QuickBooks, and investment accounting systems.
Required License or Certification
CPA preferred but not required
Is this position eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies.
