Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position
The Assistant Director of Residential Experience is a full-time, live-on professional educator-scholar who provides strategic leadership and supervision for residential communities, directly supporting the development and success of Area Coordinators and approximately 6,000 residential students.
This position is considered Essential Personnel. Essential Personnel in Housing and Residence Life are required to work during peak operational periods, including weekends, holidays, and university breaks, with vacation blackout dates typically aligned with student move-in/move-out, major campus events, and emergency response needs.
These team members play a critical role in maintaining safety, service continuity, and operational readiness during times of high demand.
The Assistant Director fosters inclusive, engaging, and safe living environments that promote academic achievement, personal growth, and community responsibility.
This role also serves on departmental and university-wide committees, contributes to student and staff development, and advances the University’s mission to prepare students for exponential success through transformative learning experiences aligned with North Carolina Preeminence 2030, Student Affairs Mission, and Housing and Residence Life’s Priorities and Attitudes.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of the Housing and Residence Life department is to provide housing accommodations and a certain quality of life for over 6,000 residential students. To provide living accommodations which are clean, safe, healthy, and comfortable while enhancing the quality of life, which supports the academic mission of North Carolina A&T State University. The Residential Experience program is designed to provide an environment which supports students in their academic pursuits, encourages interpersonal development, and offers opportunities for individual growth and challenge. To provide a quality of life for on campus students through a clean, safe, educational environment. Responsible for the overall leadership and management of all residence halls, the assignments of rooms, occupancy status of halls, housekeeping needs, maintenance concerns, and budgets, including operating and programming.

Minimum Requirements
- Masters Degree completed or in progress in college student personnel, counseling, higher education administration, or a related field (if no qualifying candidates apply, candidates without Master Degrees and sufficient work experience may be considered)
- 2 to 3 years’ experience in student affairs or an equivalent combination of leadership experience, with some supervision experience
- Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of North Carolina A&T State University
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
- Experience with student life in a residential campus with commitment to the ongoing enhancement of student learning and student life in such a setting.
- Experience with supporting and advocating students from diverse populations
- On-call and/or live-in experience in a university setting preferred.
- Specialized knowledge- Student Development Theory and Community Based Theory and those implications within a university setting.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, attention to detail, and basic understanding of assessing data.
