Assistant or Associate Professor - Applied Multimodal Artificial Intelligence

The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at the University of Houston (UH) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Applied Multimodal Artificial Intelligence at the Assistant/Associate Professor level. This position is part of the Presidential Frontier Faculty Initiative. The successful candidate will be appointed at the Assistant (Tenure-track), or Associate Professor (Tenure-eligible) ranks, with a joint appointment in the Computer Science Department. The rank of the appointment will be based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.

This new hire will complement existing research by bringing expertise in integrating data across modalities such as radiology, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), well-logging tools (resistivity, acoustic, etc.), spectroscopy, biosignals, and wearable health technologies. Specific focus areas include: AI-driven diagnostic tools with transcriptomic image analysis, fusion of multi-sensor data (e.g., resistivity + acoustic + NMR) for real-time subsurface characterization, AI-enabled physiological monitoring using multimodal wearable sensors, federated learning models for decentralized medical and energy data, interpretable deep learning systems for regulatory-compliant healthcare applications. The department is looking for outstanding candidates with the potential for exceptional research, excellence in teaching, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. The anticipated start date for this position is September 1, 2026.

UH is a Carnegie Tier One public research university that is located on a park-like campus a few minutes from the Houston city center. The university has embarked on an exciting period of research growth, a rising reputation, and committed leadership. The ECE department stretches across 3 campuses, one in Houston (central), one in Katy, TX, and one in Dalian (China). Our central campus is home to 36 tenure-track faculty, 4 full-time research faculty, and 4 instructional faculty, with 3 NAE members, 3 NAI Fellows, 8 IEEE Fellows, 3 AIMBE Fellows, 2 SAE Fellows, 2 FRSC(UK), and Fellows of OSA, APS, AAAS, ECS, SPIE, AAAS, among other distinctions. The department is home to multiple NSF Centers, Industry/University consortia, and a nanofabrication facility. The university has a well-developed faculty-centered ecosystem for translational research and commercialization of technologies.

UH is located in Houston, the fourth largest city in the United States. Houston is an international and multicultural city, with world-class restaurants, theaters, museums, and major sports teams. It offers affordable housing and a low cost of living. The university is close to the Texas Medical Center, the largest in the world, a large industrial base, and NASA.

Salary and rank commensurate with experience. The university is responsive to the needs of dual-career couples. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Qualifications: Applicants must possess an earned doctorate in electrical engineering, computer science, physics, or other relevant scientific field at the time of application.

Required Attachments by Candidate: 1. Cover Letter/Letter of Application, 2. Teaching Philosophy or Statement, 3. Research Statement, 4. Curriculum Vitae. Official transcripts are required for a faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of the final candidates.
