Position Description
The McGill University Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a three-year, renewable appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure.
The Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery is part of McGill University, Canada’s most international university, which is in vibrant, multicultural Montreal, in the francophone province of Quebec. The neuroscience community at McGill and in greater Montreal is one of the largest and most diverse in North America.
The McGill University Health Centre includes major McGill University-affiliated teaching hospitals at several sites in downtown Montreal. Neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists, and interventional neuroradiologists provide tertiary in-patient and out-patient care, engage in a wide range of clinical and basic neuroscience research, and lead strong clinical neuroscience teaching programs in undergraduate and postgraduate medicine.
The successful candidate will be appointed to clinical practice at the Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital (MNI-H), collectively referred as The Neuro—a teaching hospital affiliated with the McGill University Health Centre and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.
Job Duties
The successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Division of Neurosurgery, Brain-Computer Interface. The incumbent will be a pivotal force, directly shaping and strengthening a globally recognized, academically rigorous neurosurgery program at McGill University. This role demands active participation in our interdisciplinary clinical and research endeavors, fostering collaborative breakthroughs, integrating scientific inquiry with clinical excellence, and directly impacting cutting-edge patient care protocols across the affiliated teaching hospital network.
The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., teaching, research, supervision of graduate students, and involvement in academic and administrative committees). They will provide excellent clinical teaching and supervision to diverse residents and medical students and will be expected to pursue scholarly activities in advancing clinical care or clinical research in the area of spine neurosurgery.
Protected research time and laboratory resources within the Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital (The Neuro) will be available to the successful candidate with exceptional research potential. The position is 50% clinical and 50% research or 30% clinical and 70% research.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
Candidates must:
- Hold an MD and hold or be eligible for licensure as a neurosurgeon in the province of Quebec;
- Have advanced training and the demonstrated capacity to excel in academic neurosurgery, specifically restorative neurosurgery with expertise in brain/spine computer interface development;
- Have relevant medical education skills and a well-defined research program;
- Clinician-Scientists with MD-PhD or equivalent research-intensive training are strongly encouraged to apply;
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in all areas;
- Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
