Assistant or Associate Professor in Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), in partnership with the UBC Institute of Mental Health and the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Associate Professor (tenure).
This position will primarily be based at the distributed Island Medical Program (IMP) site in Victoria, BC, at Royal Jubilee Hospital, serving Island Health.

The UBC Department of Psychiatry consists of more than 950 Department members, including academic and clinical faculty, trainees, students and staff with broad expertise in basic neuroscience to translational and clinical research. The Department's medical education programs are some of the most widely distributed within the Faculty of Medicine consisting of faculty appointees and trainees located within each of British Columbia’s Health Authorities.
The IMP is one of five distributed sites in the Faculty of Medicine’s MD Undergraduate Program. The IMP provides innovative community-based training for physicians at hospitals and clinical sites in Victoria and across Vancouver Island, in alignment with the social accountability principle of the UBC Faculty of Medicine strategic plan. Along with the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program, the Southern Medical Program, and the Northern Medical Program, this distributed medical program was the first of its kind in North America and has proven to be a highly successful model of distributed education.
This position will report to the Head of the UBC Department of Psychiatry. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with other clinicians and scientists to develop and lead a mental health and addictions research portfolio on Vancouver Island with research focus on early intervention, concurrent disorders, mood disorders, psychosis or interventional psychiatry. The successful candidate will also be expected to actively participate in the teaching activities of the Department of Psychiatry, as well as provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners, as well as to clinicians with research interest in Island Health.
The expected starting salary for this position is $160,000 to $165,000 per annum at the Assistant Professor rank and $185,000 to $190,000 per annum at the Associate Professor rank. The successful candidate will hold an MD and certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) or equivalent qualifications in Psychiatry. They will have a proven interest in promoting and supporting evidence-based and culturally appropriate care. Clinical experience demonstrating the potential to make a significant contribution to patient care and psychiatric education is required. If appointed at the Assistant Professor level, the successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching, demonstrated ability in scholarly activity, and will be expected to provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community. If appointed at the Associate Professor level, the successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of successful teaching and ability to direct graduate students, evidence of sustained and productive scholarly activity, and must be willing to participate in the affairs of the Department and the University.
The successful candidate will join the Department of Psychiatry, Island Health, as an active medical staff, with part time clinical duties in areas such as interventional psychiatry, inpatient units or outpatient clinics.
In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own, and a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
