About the Department

The Social Sciences Department at Perimeter College is a dynamic, multidisciplinary community dedicated to bringing learning to life. The department’s 64 full-time faculty are committed to engaging students in an access, 2-year environment in meaningful discussions, hands-on learning, and real-world applications of social science concepts. The department offers courses in a wide range of fields, including History, Political Science, African-American Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Education, Social Work, Gerontology, Anthropology, Homeland Security & Emergency Management, and Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies. Whether examining human behavior, political systems, social institutions, or cultural identities, these courses provide the knowledge and critical thinking skills needed to understand the world and make informed decisions. Many Social Sciences students go on to earn bachelor’s and advanced degrees and pursue careers in law, business, education, journalism, criminal justice, and public service. Through their studies, students develop essential skills in communication, creative and critical thinking, research, and scientific inquiry—while gaining a deeper understanding of how people interact, grow, and shape the societies in which they live. The Social Sciences Department at Perimeter College opens doors to a better understanding of the human experience and prepares students to thrive in a culturally diverse, ever-changing world.

Position Description

Perimeter College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor position in Education. This is a teaching-focused position: 80% of the workload is instruction, with service and scholarly and creative activity accounting for 10% each. Perimeter faculty are responsible for providing 27-32 credit hours of instruction per academic year and engaging in service to the department, college, and university. Perimeter College faculty maintain a campus presence, and the successful applicant will demonstrate a strong commitment to early undergraduate teaching and learning, and the ability to thrive in a highly diverse academic setting. Perimeter College is a multi-campus access institution, and the teaching assignment may be on any of the college’s campuses.

Required Experience

A minimum of three years of successful teaching experience in the K-12 environment.

For assistant professor: some college teaching experience, which may include graduate teaching assistant work as an instructor of record, part-time instructor work, or similar experience.

For associate professor: candidate must have held the rank previously at a comparable institution for a minimum of one academic year.

Required Education

A Ph.D. or Ed.D. in the teaching field is required by the time of the appointment. The teaching field is defined as Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, Secondary Education, Special Education, Reading/Language Arts, Math Education, Social Studies, Science Education, Teaching & Learning, Learning Sciences, or Curriculum and Instruction. Other concentrations can be considered pending content review.

Degrees with concentrations in Higher Education, Counselor Education, General Education or Higher Education Administration cannot be considered.

Salary Range for Assistant Professor: $49,082 – $54,082.

Salary range for Associate Professor: commensurate with experience, Candidate must have held the Associate Professor rank previously at a comparable institution for a minimum of one academic year.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Current certification or eligibility for certification to teach at the P-12 level in the State of Georgia
  • College teaching experience. One year is preferred and can include experience as a teaching assistant at a college or university.
  • Experience teaching online and using a distance learning platform.
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in high-impact educational practices, scholarship of teaching and learning, building college-to-career linkages, and/or other pedagogical initiatives that enhance student success.
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in scholarship in the discipline and/or scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Experience in collaborating with local school districts or community-based education organizations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to teach effectively using a variety of methods with a demonstrated knowledge of instructional technology.
  • Ability to create a sense of belonging for a varied student population and facilitate student learning in both the in-person and virtual learning environments.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent communication, organizational and computer skills (able to maintain appropriate records).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional technology.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues to achieve discipline, department, or college goals.

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

Tenure-track positions are academic year (August-May) appointments, with an 80% teaching, 10% service, and 10% Scholarly & Creative Activity workload distribution.

The selected candidate will be responsible for:

  • Providing 27-32 semester hours of instruction per academic year
  • Providing student support and advising
  • Maintaining weekly office hours
  • Working effectively and professionally with students and colleagues

Expectations also include service to the department, college, and university as well as maintaining a campus presence.
