The University of Washington’s, Department of Medicine, Division of Medical Genetics is recruiting for one (1) .8 to 1.0 FTE faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor level (non-tenure eligible). Specific rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications as generally described in UW’s Faculty Code Section 24-34.

Assistant and Associate Teaching Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. This position is anticipated to start July 1, 2026; specific start date is negotiable.

The University of Washington faculty engages in teaching and service.

This position is part of the leadership team of the Master of Science in Genetic Counseling program and serves in an administrative role as Assistant Program Director. The mission of the genetic counseling program is to be an equitable and inclusive genetic counseling graduate program that provides innovative training of lifelong learners for a career in care, leadership, and science to meet the evolving needs of precision health.

The Assistant Program Director position would have 0.8 FTE dedicated to administrative and teaching functions in the Genetic Counseling Graduate Program (GCGP). Specifically, the Assistant Program Director would be a co-instructor for a 3-course series on Genetic Counseling theory. The 3 courses in this series are taught synchronously on the UW Seattle campus in autumn, winter, and spring quarters. Additional teaching responsibilities will be assigned based on individual expertise and GCGP faculty needs.

An additional .2 FTE may be available for work as a genetic counselor in the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) genetics clinic. Funding for this FTE is provided by UWMC and dependent on funding availability.

Part-time positions are not eligible for visa or permanent residence sponsorship.

Compensation

The base salary range for this position will be: $9,000 - $12,000 per month ($108,000 - $144,000 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Salary will be pro-rated based on final FTE at the time of hire. In collaboration with the Program Director and other program leaders, the Assistant Program Director is responsible for the planning, developing, and monitoring of those aspects of the curriculum that support students’ integration of knowledge, skills, experience, and professional ethics into the practice of genetic counseling. Duties include:

  • Providing support to the program director in all aspects of program leadership
  • In the case of temporary absence of the program director, assuming responsibilities as interim program director, providing immediate oversight of the program
  • Providing program coordination and instructional planning
  • Contributing to administrative responsibilities, including but not limited to strategic planning, budgeting, and admissions activities
  • Designing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating clinical and instructional aspects of the curriculum
  • Monitoring, assessing, evaluating, and documenting student progress through the curriculum and in attaining practice-based competency objectives
  • Remediating student performance
  • Providing academic advising
  • Teaching graduate-level courses in genetic counseling and other areas in accordance with professional interests and expertise
  • Supervising genetic counseling students in a clinical setting
  • Serving as an adviser for student capstone projects
  • Mentoring genetic counseling students
  • Serving on program committees and advisory boards
  • Serving on the admissions committee including reading and evaluating applications to the MS in Genetic Counseling program, attending committee meetings, and conducting interviews
  • Participating in recruitment activities and events to promote the GCGP
  • Attending quarterly faculty meetings
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • MS in in Genetic Counseling or Human Genetics (or foreign equivalent).
  • Certification in genetic counseling by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) (or foreign equivalent) by the start date of the appointment.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a clinical, and/or research genetic counselor.
  • Expertise in post-secondary teaching, and/or training/coursework in subjects relevant to delivering and administering post-secondary education, including but not limited to curriculum design, assessment, evaluation, or educational andragogy.
