Assistant Professor, Ethics of Technology and Artificial Intelligence
AOS: Open
AOC: Ethics of Technology and Artificial Intelligence
The Philosophy Department at Rice University, located in Houston, Texas, seeks to appoint a tenure-track assistant professor who would help lead a growing initiative at Rice in the ethics of emerging technologies and responsible artificial intelligence (AOC). The ideal candidate will be able to show teaching, research, and public communication excellence in this field, but all candidates with relevant accomplishments will receive careful consideration. AOS is open, but candidates who can also meet some of the Department's research and teaching needs in epistemology and the philosophy of science will receive particularly favorable attention, though this is not a requirement for the position.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Philosophy by July 1, 2026, and will be expected to teach and advise students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Rice University has a semester-based teaching schedule with a 2-2 teaching load. The University expects faculty members to maintain an active program of scholarly research and publication and to contribute service to the Department, University, and profession.
For full consideration, applications should be received by November 1 (via Interfolio) https://apply.interfolio.com/173881 and must include: a cover letter of 1-2 pages; CV, including a list of publications; a writing sample; a statement of teaching philosophy and interests (a complete teaching portfolio, including student evaluations, will be requested from finalists), and three letters of reference. For further information or questions, please contact the department chair, Robert Howell, at rh77@rice.edu.
