"Assistant Professor, History of the United States since 1920"

The Faculty of History is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in post-1920 U.S. political history and/or the history of the United States in the World since 1920, beginning 1 October, 2026.

The postholder will teach modern American history and supervise research at the undergraduate, MPhil, and PhD levels. They will help to deliver a team-taught, first-year undergraduate survey course, North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, 1775-present, along with more specialised second- or third-year teaching of U.S. history. The successful candidate will also be expected to undertake to take their share of Faculty administration.

We are looking for someone with excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; who can show a commitment to supporting students academically in the Faculty and be able and ready to participate in the life of the Faculty and wider University. They will be part of a lively and intellectually stimulating research community, which performs to the highest international levels in research and publications. Cambridge hosts one of the largest U.S. history PhD programmes outside North America, and the postholder will be expected to attract and train doctoral candidates.

Required qualifications:

• A doctorate in a relevant subject, awarded by the start of the appointment
• A strong teaching record and a firm commitment to teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels
• An exceptional record of research and publications for the applicant's career stage
• Experience of, and/or aptitude for organising and participating in collaborative teaching and research
• Willingness to undertake management and administrative duties
