Senior Research Officer on Sequences for 6G Systems

The University of Essex is one of the top research-intensive universities in the UK. The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE) is top-rated and has a long-standing tradition of research into Communications and Networks. It was one of the first UK universities to actively research into these areas, back in the Department of Electronic System Engineering (ESE). In the recent Research Excellence Framework 2021 (REF’2021), CSEE ranks the 6th in the UK for our research power and the 9th for our research impact (by Grade Point Average).

You will be appointed as a Senior Research Officer at Essex for a fixed term to 30 March 2026 and will work with the PI Dr Zilong Liu (email: zilong.liu@essex.ac.uk) for successful delivery of the EPSRC project “Evolving Sequences for Beyond-5G Machine-Type Communications (SORT)”. As a driving force of this project, you will 1) develop novel sequences and signal processing algorithms for modern high mobility communication and integrated communications and sensing (ISAC) systems and 2) analyse and evaluate their system performances through theoretical derivation and MATLAB simulation. You are expected to publish/present the research outputs in quality IEEE journals and flagship conferences and file necessary patents to protect our research outputs. You are also expected to actively engage with the research community and industrial partners for maximizing the project impact.

You should have a relevant PhD level degree in wireless communications as well as rich experience in the design, analysis, and evaluation of physical layer wireless system with an emphasis on coding, modulation, and multiple access. You must have a profound understanding and proven track record (demonstrated through quality publications) on sequences and their applications in wireless system design. Experience in the following research topics are expected: OFDM, OTFS, ISAC, Code-Domain NOMA (e.g., SCMA), and RSMA. Additionally, quality publications in top-rated IEEE journals (e.g., TIT, TSP, TWC, TCOM, and TVT) are essential. This is a research-focused position and no teaching duties are required.

A full list of duties and responsibilities can be found within the job pack.

This post is fixed-term until 30 March 2026.

Please note, the successful candidate will be appointed to the post of Senior Research Officer.

As part of the process and to be successful you will be required to demonstrate how you your research has been impactful within and beyond the academic sphere, the importance of this and the effect it will have on the University.
