Assistant Professor in Applied and Computational Geophysics

The Department of Earth, Energy, and Environment in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor (tenure track, teaching and research stream) with a specialization in applied and computational geophysics. This position will build on the department's strengths in geophysics and is expected to build and strengthen collaborative, interdisciplinary research programs. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026.

Qualified applicants will push the boundaries of both fundamental and applied geophysics to characterize subsurface systems. Successful candidates will not only reveal how Earth systems function and evolve, but they will design innovative measurement and analysis techniques that open new windows of discovery into dynamic Earth processes. We seek scholars addressing major societal challenges such as earthquakes, natural hazards, planetary geophysics, climate adaptation (e.g., geological CO2 sequestration, permafrost monitoring), subsurface energy transition (e.g., geothermal, hydrogen storage, critical elements/minerals), urban infrastructure safety and resilience, environmental contamination and remediation, and water security. Candidates will demonstrate originality in defining important scientific problems and in integrating modern computational methods with advanced geophysical techniques to generate transformative insights. Evidence of working across discipline boundaries is essential and successful candidates will engage in interdisciplinary collaborations with colleagues in Earth, Energy, and Environment focus areas. Building on leading-edge infrastructure at the university and linking geophysical observations, experiments, and models into a coherent understanding will be key to success in this role.

Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in geophysics or a closely related field. A strong record of impactful research in geophysics and geophysical systems is required. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an independent, high-quality research program, as evidenced by securing external research funding from a variety of sources and publication in scholarly and/or industry-relevant forums. They will energetically foster collaborations and group research activities, within and beyond the University of Calgary (e.g., academic, Indigenous groups, industry, government). The university is a signatory to DORA (Declaration on Research Assessment) and places value on diverse scholarly activities that includes, but is not limited to, community outreach (interviews, public and online forums, scientific social media), policy and regulatory guidance, entrepreneurship, and scientific resource development (e.g., databases, software). The candidate will also be expected to play an important role in the advancement of the university's earth, energy, and environment research goals, including the development of shared, core research facilities.

The candidate will play an important role in training and supervision of students at the undergraduate (BSc) and graduate (MSc, PhD) level. The successful applicant must demonstrate strong potential for excellence in teaching at the post-secondary level, specifically showing interest and ability to teach courses in geophysics, geology, energy science, and geophysical field methods. The desire to pursue pedagogical and curricular development in an academic setting is expected.

Additionally, the candidate should provide evidence of collegial contributions within their organization and their commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), since they will be expected to fully engage in departmental and university service at the University of Calgary and work effectively with people from diverse communities and cultures.

The Department of Earth, Energy, and Environment is a recently formed department at the University of Calgary, whose genesis was driven by the need to tackle significant Earth challenges that are emerging today. We are building a community of change-makers: a group of people who will leverage existing expertise and approach problems from every angle to find creative solutions. We have an audacious growth plan that will see us expand into new areas of research and teaching, with a focus on mobilizing science and creating positive impact. We are Earth@UCalgary.
