Assistant Professor in Biology

Saint Martin’s University, a private Catholic, Benedictine university located in Western Washington, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in biology at the assistant professor level to begin August 2026. A Ph.D. in Biology or a related field is required, and teaching experience is highly desirable. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in vertebrate/organismal biology who can also teach human anatomy and physiology. Applicants must have a strong commitment to undergraduate education and the ability to teach courses across all levels of an undergraduate biology curriculum.

Biology courses taught will include General Biology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Senior Research, and courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a research program involving undergraduates and will be expected to advise students; perform departmental and university-wide service; and participate in ongoing curriculum development.

The successful candidate will also be expected to teach in the University’s Core Curriculum and occasionally in the First Year Seminar program. The teaching load for this position is 24 semester credit hours per year, with a reduced load in the first and fourth years.

Faculty members are expected to support the Catholic, Benedictine liberal arts mission of the university. Candidates must have valid documentation permitting them to work in the US from the date on which the appointment at Saint Martin’s takes effect. The position is subject to final budgetary approval.

To apply, please submit a letter of interest, current C.V., unofficial or official copies of graduate and undergraduate transcripts, a one- to two-page statement of teaching philosophy, a one- to two-page statement summarizing your proposed undergraduate research projects, and 3 letters of recommendation with your application materials. If the recommenders would like to keep their letters confidential, they can email them to Arwyn Smalley.

Review of applications will begin January 15, 2026, and continue until the position is filled. Questions and inquiries can be directed to Dr. Arwyn Smalley by email at: alsmalley@stmartin.edu or by telephone at (360) 688-2670. Saint Martin’s University is dedicated to the goal of building a culturally diverse and pluralistic faculty and staff committed to teaching and working in a multicultural environment and strongly encourages applications from women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and covered veterans.
