The Department of History seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in the History of Capitalism on a full-time and indefinite basis from 1 September 2026.
You will be part of one of the largest History departments in the UK with a thriving community of teachers and researchers covering a range of disciplines and geographical areas.
About You
You will have expertise in the History of Capitalism fitting in with at least one of the University of Warwick’s interdisciplinary research spotlights.
You need to be able to demonstrate how your research in the History of Capitalism is fresh and exciting and complements existing University, faculty and departmental research strategies. Interdisciplinary approaches that aim to reconfigure histories of capitalism by paying close attention to interconnection by way of environment and society, empire and race, human and non-human agency, and/or power are encouraged.
The post is open with respect to period and region. We would especially welcome candidates whose work engages with critical political economy, gender, inequality, labour history, infrastructure, or systems of production. Preference may be given to candidates working from archives and perspectives in the Global South, transnational/diaspora studies and whose work employs new digital methods.
The History department has other academic staff researching and teaching in related fields, including global history, environmental history, colonial history, Jewish history, labour history, histories of race, and the history of science, technology, and medicine. Applicants should indicate in their covering letter how their research expertise interfaces with existing research specialisms and research centres in the department.
It is envisaged that you may teach on some of the modules listed below, depending on the successful candidate’s knowledge and expertise and department requirements:
In addition, you will be encouraged to propose your own modules depending on your expertise and research interests.
You will also be expected to supervise final-year dissertations and contribute to MA teaching.
You will undertake lecturing, seminar teaching, essay tutorials, office hours, marking of undergraduate work and monitoring of student attendance in accordance with the Department’s quality assurance practices. You will also act as personal tutor to an assigned group of undergraduate students, providing pastoral support and guidance during the academic year. You will be actively engaged in research in the History of Capitalism.
