Assistant Professor in Photonics Quantum Technologies

The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Photonics Quantum Technologies. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, at the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. Eligibility and willingness to register as a Professional Engineer in Ontario is highly desirable.

We seek an outstanding candidate with research interests in Photonics Quantum Technologies. Areas of interest include but are not limited to: photonic devices, circuits, and systems for emerging applications that leverage the quantum properties of light, such as communications, computing, networks, sensing, and imaging. Both experimental and theoretical research will be considered. Candidates who aim to develop partnerships between academia, industry and government research labs to support the Canadian national ecosystem are encouraged to apply.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of contributions and publications in leading journals or conferences, or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement and representative publications, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements by referees of top international stature.

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative research at the highest international level; to establish a strong, externally funded independent research program; and to contribute to the enrichment of both undergraduate and graduate programs in the department.

Candidates must demonstrate excellence in teaching which can include teaching-related activities such as previous experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, delivering conference presentations or posters, or experience as a teaching assistant or course instructor. Professional or lived experiences that enhance the ability to teach a diverse student body are highly valued.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by teaching accomplishments, and through the teaching dossier, including a teaching statement, sample course syllabi (either of courses delivered by the candidate or planned for the future), course evaluations, teaching assistant evaluations or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.

Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) are essential to academic excellence and to the success of our department. Evidence of a commitment to EDI must be demonstrated by a statement, submitted with the application, describing research or teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities, the development of inclusive pedagogies, views, experiences and/or plans furthering EDI via teaching mentorship, outreach, and/or other activities.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and is competitive with our North American peers.
