Assistant Professor in Religions of Transnational East Asia
The Department for the Study of Religion and the Department of East Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Religions of Transnational East Asia. This will be a joint appointment between Department for the Study of Religion (60%) and Department of East Asian Studies (40%). The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. degree in the Study of Religion, East Asian Studies or a related discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research, to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program, and to teach courses in both departments.
We seek scholars whose work engages with the historical and/or contemporary processes of the making and unmaking of religion in transnational East Asia, broadly defined. Both the Study of Religion and East Asian studies are interdisciplinary and multi-methodological departments that center questions of theory and method in research and teaching, and we seek a candidate who will contribute to this endeavour.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees. Language proficiency is expected in the specialized area of research.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application as well as strong letters of reference.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
