Assistant Professor in Sedimentary Geology
The Department of Earth, Energy, and Environment (Earth@UCalgary) in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor (tenure track, teaching and research stream) with a specialization in sedimentary geology. This position is a key piece of the department's renewal and the candidate's research program is expected to bring modern geoscience approaches to the study of sedimentary systems and processes. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026.
We seek a geoscientist with research interests in integrating relevant multi-scale characteristics of sedimentary systems with the aim of investigating processes of depositional history of sedimentary rock units, and their effects on relevant properties through the application of novel data-driven approaches. Candidates should have an outstanding track record of expertise with a diversity of topics such as Earth's ancient climate and paleoenvironments, basin analysis, stratigraphy and stratigraphic modeling, sediment transport and routing, modern sedimentary systems, sedimentary-hosted economic resources, subsurface transitional energy pathways, applied field research, digital and data-driven analysis methods, or similarly related emerging fields.
Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in geology, geoscience, or a closely related field. A strong record of impactful research in sedimentary geology is required. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an active, high-quality research program, as evidenced by securing external research funding from a variety of sources, publication in scholarly and/or industry-relevant forums, and establishing collaborative research across and beyond the department and the university. The university places value on diverse scholarly activities, including (but not limited to) community outreach (interviews, public and online forums, scientific social media), policy and regulatory guidance, entrepreneurship, and scientific resource development (e.g., databases, software).
The candidate will play an important role in teaching and research supervision of students at the undergraduate (BSc) and graduate level (MSc, PhD) and will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in sedimentology, sedimentary petrology, and geologic field methods. The successful applicant must demonstrate excellence in teaching at the post-secondary level. The desire to pursue pedagogical and curricular development in an academic setting is expected.
Additionally, the candidate should provide evidence of collegial contributions within their organization and their commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), since they will be expected to fully engage in departmental and university service at the University of Calgary and work effectively with people from diverse communities and cultures.
