Assistant Professor in Stochastic Operations Research
Job Summary
We seek a talented individual to strengthen the department in mathematical methods for Stochastic Operations Research, focusing on exact and approximate methods in Markov decision theory. The role emphasizes applications in healthcare optimization and expanding departmental strengths. The position is embedded in the Stochastic Operations Research team and the Centre for Healthcare Operations Improvement and Research (CHOIR).
Responsibilities
- Develop your own identity as a mathematician.
- Attrattr national or European research grants to support your research line.
- Teach in the Department of Applied Mathematics at Bachelor and Master levels, including service teaching to other programs.
- Lectures are in English; mastering Dutch is a long-term goal.
- For the first three years, spend 33% on teaching and 67% on research; later, 50/50.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Hold a PhD in Mathematics, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Econometrics, or a closely related field.
- Have an existing track record in research, demonstrated by publications in high-ranking journals or strong evidence of high research potential.
- Possess good communication skills and be an inspiring teacher.
- Have acquired or be willing to acquire the Dutch University Teaching Qualification (UTQ).
- Have an excellent command of the English language.

What the Employer Offers
A position with an initial one-year contract, potentially converting to permanent after positive evaluation. Part-time is negotiable. Salary ranges from €4,728 to €7,297 gross per month, depending on qualifications. Terms align with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Universities, including a holiday allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
