The Opportunity:

The (SCI) seeks a scholar, educator or practitioner who is excited about preparing students for a rapidly changing media environment and helping shape the future of journalism education in Hawai'i and the Pacific.

The successful candidate will teach foundational journalism courses and develop upper-division courses in their area of expertise. UHM provides a distinctive setting for exploring journalism across cultures, communities, platforms, and the Pacific region. We seek a collaborative colleague who will mentor students, engage with the profession and contribute to the program’s growth.

UHM, located on the island of O'ahu, is the flagship campus of the University of Hawai'i system and a Tier-1 Research University (Very High Research Activity, Carnegie Classification). UHM is a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant university with the core mission of generating, preserving, and disseminating knowledge for the greater good of the people of the state of Hawai‘i and the world beyond through teaching, research, and service in a way that promotes inclusiveness and beneficence for all. Our students come from Hawai'i, across the United States, and around the world. Almost all of the state’s primary media organizations, including Civil Beat, Hawaii News Now, the Star-Advertiser and Hawai'i Public Radio, operate within a few miles of the campus. The UHM Journalism program is the only one in the state, and one of only a few in all of Oceania, to offer a bachelor’s degree explicitly in “Journalism.”
