It is hereby announced that, by my order issued on this date, an international competition is now open for a period of 30 (thirty) business days, starting on the business day immediately following the publication of this Notice in the Diário da República, to fill 1 (one) position in the university teaching career, in the category of Assistant Professor, under an indefinite-term public service employment contract, for the Academic Area of Biomedicine at the Faculty of Medical Sciences | NOVA Medical School, opened pursuant to Articles 37 et seq. of the Statute of the University Teaching Career (ECDU), in its current wording, as well as by the Regulations on Competitive Examinations for the University Teaching Career at NOVA University Lisbon, (Order No. 3012/2015 of February 20) published in the 2nd series of the Diário da República, No. 58, of March 24, and by the Regulations for Competitive Examinations for Academic Careers at the Faculty of Medical Sciences (Regulation No. 609/2017 of November 28), published in the 2nd series of the Diário da República, No. 229, of November 28, as well as by Rector’s Order No. 100/2022 of June 6, 2022, and other applicable legislation.
The opening of this competitive selection process, as well as the appointment of the selection committee, was authorized by the Rector’s Order dated 19/06/2026.

I. Admission Requirements:
1 - Pursuant to Article 41-A of the ECDU, a doctoral degree is required to apply for this position.
2 - Meet the general admission requirements for recruitment to public service positions.
3 - The Assistant Professor to be hired will perform the duties inherent to the professional category of Assistant Professor in the university teaching career, as provided for in Article 5 of the ECDU, in the Academic Area of Biomedicine, including teaching and research duties in the following areas:
i) Cancer;
ii) Immunology;
iii) Molecular mechanisms of diseases;
iv) Cellular and molecular biology.
II. Requirements for approval based on absolute merit:
1 - Approval of candidates based on absolute merit is contingent upon their having a comprehensive curriculum vitae that the selection committee reasonably deems to demonstrate scientific and pedagogical merit, research capacity, and professional activity consistent with the academic discipline for which the competition was opened, and appropriate to the respective faculty rank, as documented in the application materials submitted for the competition.
2 - Candidates will be approved on the basis of absolute merit if they submit a curriculum vitae demonstrating scientific and pedagogical activity at the international level, evidenced by compliance with the various parameters defined in this Notice, evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively by the jury, and if they meet the following cumulative minimum requirements:
i) Ph.D. in Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Biology, or related fields;
ii) Teaching experience in an integrated master’s program in medicine, in the areas of Molecular Mechanisms of Disease, Cellular and Molecular Biology, and Oncobiology;
iii) Teaching experience using Team-Based Learning (TBL) methodology;
iv) Teaching experience in undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs in the areas of Oncology, Immunology, Chronic Diseases and Aging, and In Vitro Disease Models;
v) Conduct of fundamental research with proven impact through relevant publications in the fields of Immunology, Cancer, and Oncoimmunology;
vi) A minimum of five articles as lead author or co-lead author and a minimum of thirty articles as co-author in scientific publications in the fields mentioned in point iv);
vii) Experience and commitment to supervising and managing research teams, including master’s and doctoral students, demonstrated by the successful completion of master’s or doctoral theses;
viii) Experience in securing competitive national and international research funding in the areas indicated in point v);
ix) Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and experience in effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, particularly with clinicians.
III — Criteria for evaluation based on relative merit:
The criteria, indicators, and weightings for evaluating candidates based on relative merit are as follows:
1 — In the area of scientific performance, development, and innovation, the following indicators will be considered (50% weighting):
a) Scientific Output - Quality of scientific output in the fields of Immunology, Oncology, and Oncoimmunology: articles in international journals, oral or poster presentations at scientific conferences. In the evaluation of this parameter, co-authorship of articles in indexed scientific journals, authorship of letters to the editor, and the h-index, according to Scopus, will be valued at 20%;
b) Scientific Activity - Quality and quantity of the scientific projects in which the candidate participated and the results obtained; the quality assessment should place special emphasis on funding obtained through public tenders and intellectual property registrations - 10%;
c) Formation of research teams - Ability to lead and manage scientific research teams, with particular emphasis on the supervision and number of doctoral and master’s students - 10%;
d) Engagement with the scientific community - National and international scientific recognition is demonstrated by the ability to engage with the scientific community, notably through the review of scientific articles, participation on thesis committees for master’s and doctoral degrees, the receipt of scientific awards, and participation in scientific networks, among other activities - 5%;
e) Mobility - Degree of internationalization - 5%.
2 — The assessment of relative merit in the area of Teaching Ability will focus solely on actual, institutionally verified teaching activity at institutions of higher education, as reflected in the official teaching load, with greater weight given to teaching experience in undergraduate or integrated master’s programs in Medicine. The following indicators will be considered in the assessment of teaching ability (45% weighting):
a) Teaching activity - The quality and quantity of service provided in Bachelor’s degree programs and the Integrated Master’s in Medicine, as well as in graduate-level training offered in second- and third-cycle programs, will be evaluated - 20%;
b) Educational output—Educational output should be evaluated in terms of the creation of new programs and the corresponding educational content of course units or advanced courses, or the redesign and improvement of existing course units—5%;
c) Educational coordination—Experience in coordinating course units at the first, second, or third cycle should be evaluated—10%;
d) Dissemination of knowledge within the community - Supervision of final projects for undergraduate students, supervision of Master’s and Ph.D. students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, in the fields of Immunology, Cancer, and Oncoimmunology. – 10%;
3 — In the evaluation of other relevant activities (academic management and university extension), the following indicators will be considered (5% weighting):
a) Participation in activities related to the dissemination of scientific knowledge and knowledge transfer to society - 3%;
b) Participation in scientific, pedagogical, or institutional management activities - 2%.

V. Submission of Applications
1 - Applications, accompanied by the documents listed below, must be submitted in digital format within 30 business days from the day following the publication of this Notice in the Diário da República.
2 - Applications may be submitted in person in a sealed, properly labeled envelope at the secretariat of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, located at its main building at Campo dos Mártires da Pátria, or sent by mail to the address of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Campo dos Mártires da Pátria, No. 130, 1169-056 Lisbon.
3 - Failure to meet the deadline for submitting the application, as well as failure to submit or late submission of the documents referred to in the preceding points, will result in the application’s exclusion. False statements made by applicants will be punished in accordance with the law.
VI. Application Submission
1 — Applications must be submitted by completing the corresponding application form, which is available at https://www.nms.unl.pt/pt-pt/faculdade/junte-se-a-nms/recrutamento? category=4345 , and the applicant must consent to receiving communications and notifications related to this competitive selection process via email.
2 — The application must be accompanied by the following documentation, which must be submitted in Portuguese or English; proficiency in Portuguese is required.
a) Certificate proving a Ph.D. in Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Biology, or related fields; If the qualification was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, pursuant to Decree-Law No. 66/2018, published in the Diário da República, 1st series, No. 157, of August 16, 2018, and all formalities set forth therein must be fulfilled by the date of hiring, under penalty of exclusion.
b) 3 copies, in digital format (USB drive) or hard copy, of the candidate’s curriculum vitae, dated and signed, listing the work performed and published and the activities carried out by the candidate, in accordance with the provisions of Article 4 of the ECDU;
c) 3 copies of each of the published works mentioned in the curriculum vitae, preferably in digital format (USB drive), specifically the most representative ones, with regard to their contribution to the development and evolution of the academic field for which the competition is open;
d) A professional development plan demonstrating the candidate’s potential to teach various courses in their scientific field, the degree of specialization and internationalization of their research, and their ability to secure competitive funding, with five-year objectives for evaluating the plan;
e) A sworn statement that if the selection committee decides to request the documentation indicated in the preceding subparagraphs or any other scientific documentation cited in the candidate’s curriculum vitae, in hard copy, such documentation must be submitted within 10 business days;
3 — Documents proving compliance with the general requirements for recruitment to public service positions may be replaced by a statement provided on the form referred to in paragraph 1.
4 — The absence of any supporting documents that cannot be supplemented ex officio will result in the rejection of the application.
5 — Applicants must organize their curriculum vitae in accordance with the format specified in Section III of this Notice.

- Doctor Maria José Oliveira – Visiting Associate Professor at the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar da Universidade do Porto;
- Doctor Ana Luísa Correia – Principal Investigator at the Fundação Champalimaud, Lisboa;
- Doctor José António Henriques de Conde Belo – Full Professor at the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas | NOVA Medical School, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa;
- Doctor Gabriela Araújo da Silva – Associate Professor with Aggregation at the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas | NOVA Medical School, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa;
VIII. Public Hearings
1 - At its first meeting, the Selection Committee shall decide whether to hold public hearings for candidates who have been approved on the basis of absolute merit; such hearings are intended solely to clarify issues related to the documents submitted by the candidates.
2 - If it is necessary to hold these public hearings, they shall take place between the 30th and 50th day following the candidates’ admission on the basis of absolute merit, and all candidates shall be informed at least 5 days in advance of the date and location where these public hearings will take place.
IX. Evaluation of Applications
1 - Once the application deadline has passed, the jury shall meet in person or via teleconference to verify the eligibility of the applications. At the eligibility review meeting, the jury shall verify the admission requirements, draw up a list of eligible and/or ineligible candidates, and decide whether or not to hold a public hearing.
2 - If there are no grounds for rejecting applications based on the administrative admission requirements set forth in Section I of this notice, the jury will decide on approval or non-approval based on absolute merit, by a roll-call vote with justification, taking into account the approval requirements identified in Section II.
3 - Candidates who receive a favorable recommendation for approval based on absolute merit from a majority of the jury members are eligible to participate in the competition.
4 - Once the candidates who have been definitively approved on the basis of absolute merit have been identified, they are ranked in order of relative merit, based on the ranking categories and criteria, their respective weightings, and the final scoring system, established in accordance with the provisions of Article 50(6) of the ECDU and Article 16(6) of the Regulations for Competitive Examinations for University Teaching Careers at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Each committee member shall submit a written opinion ranking the admitted candidates, assigning a score to each criterion on a scale of 0 to 100, and a final score also on a scale of 0 to 100, resulting from the sum of the scores assigned to the weighted components as stipulated in this call for applications.
5 - If no candidates have been disqualified, the selection committee shall also evaluate the candidates at the admission meeting.
6 - The ranking of admitted candidates is determined by a vote of the jury members, in accordance with the ranking presented in the opinion referred to in the preceding paragraph, pursuant to subparagraphs (a) through (f) of paragraph 11 of Article 16 of the UNL Regulations on Competitive Examinations for University Teaching Careers.
7 - If any candidate is not admitted, they shall be notified to submit their comments, in accordance with the Code of Administrative Procedure.
8 - Notifications will be sent by email, in accordance with Article 112(1)(c) and Article 113(5) of the CPA.
9 - Following the hearing of the interested parties, the selection committee shall evaluate the arguments presented and approve the final ranking list of successful candidates. The selection committee’s final decision shall be ratified by the Rector of NOVA, who shall also be responsible for deciding on the hiring.
