WHO WE ARE
INESC-ID (www.inesc-id.pt), “Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores: Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa” is a Research and Development and Innovation Organization (R&D+i) in the fields of Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering.

The Executive Board of INESC-ID approved an international selection call for 1 (one) uncertain-term work contract for a Researcher in the scope of 2024.14198.PEX, funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia.
This uncertain-term employment contract will remain in effect for the period necessary to complete the objectives/functions, with an estimated duration of 8 (eight) months.
1. OBJECTIVES | FUNCTIONS
The successful candidate will be responsible for creating and curating a multi-sensor satellite image database, primarily based on data from Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2, but potentially incorporating images from additional relevant satellite platforms. This database will focus on the seven target classes used in Brazil’s DETER system. In addition, the database must include Land Use / Land Cover (LU/LC) annotations from the TerraClass system, alongside complementary metadata such as topography, regional humidity, and climate indicators to support later knowledge representation and AI modeling phases.
The resulting annotated image dataset will be hosted on DEUCALION, a high-performance computational platform co-funded by FCT and EuroHPC, operated by INESCTEC / University of Minho, ensuring robust data management and accessibility for the research community.
Main Responsibilities
- Access and process satellite imagery using tools such as Google Earth Engine;
- Select and annotate image areas from across the Brazilian Legal Amazon (BLA) (~5 million km²);
- Ensure data quality by choosing scenes with minimal occlusions or distortions;
- Integrate geo-referenced data (latitude/longitude), LU/LC classifications, and environmental metadata;
- Collaborate with experts from INPE and IEAv to ensure accurate, meaningful annotations;
- Validate computational methods proposed by Master’s and PhD students;
- Deliver a well-structured, documented dataset to support subsequent AI model training and evaluation;
Research Conduct: Contributions to the knowledge base and academic publications. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams within the institution to foster a collaborative research environment.
Networking and Collaboration: Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with research partners, industry stakeholders, and relevant European consortia. Represent the institution in conferences, workshops, and other relevant events to enhance visibility and collaboration opportunities.
Project Development and Management: Identify funding opportunities and actively participate in the development of proposals for European projects. Coordinate the preparation, submission, and management of project proposals. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful project execution.
Mentorship and Training: Mentor junior researchers, master, and graduate students in the area of application, fostering a supportive and productive research environment.

5. SALARY | MEAL ALLOWANCE
In compliance with the provisions of the INESC-ID Research Career internal regulations, the remuneration corresponds to a monthly remuneration, 2 408,11 € (Two thousand, four hundred and eight euros and eleven cents), prior to any deductions or withholdings.
Meal allowance per work day of 6.15€ (six euros and fifteen cents).
6. QUALIFICATIONS
Any national, foreign and stateless candidate(s) holding a doctorate degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Remote Sensing, Environmental Engineering, or related field may submit an application.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate experience in:
- Satellite image processing and annotation
- Proficiency in Python and cloud-based geospatial tools (e.g., Google Earth Engine)
- Familiarity with geospatial analysis tools (QGIS, ArcGIS, GDAL)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
In case of doctorate degrees awarded by a foreign higher education institution, the degree must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16th of August (https://www.dges.gov.pt/en/pagina/degree-and-diploma-recognition) and all formalities established therein must be fulfilled, by the selected candidate, until the date of signature of the contract.
7. General call admission requirements
The general admission requirements include those specified in the previous point and that, from the candidate’s curriculum vitae, one may validate the compliance with productivity criteria such as:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
- Ability to work autonomously and within multidisciplinary teams;
- Good communication skills in English (oral and written);
- Proven scientific output or technical contributions relevant to the project;
- Availability to work full-time during the contract period.
The applicants must also have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and an advanced level of proficiency in English and Portuguese, as well as being enthusiastic, proactive, collaborative and able to work individually and as a team, and with various levels of internal organization.
8. EVALUATION OF THE SCIENTIFIC AND CURRICULAR CAREER
The evaluation of the scientific and curricular path focuses on relevance, quality and timeliness in the area of the call and alignment with its context in the last five years, by considering:
- a) Scientific curriculum and academic qualifications — 90%
- b) Interview — 10%
The period of five years referred to in the previous point may be increased by the jury, at the request of the candidate, when justified on grounds of suspension of scientific activity for socially protected reasons, namely for reasons of parental leave, prolonged serious illness, and other situations of unavailability for work legally protected.
The evaluation of the scientific and curricular career has two components, namely:
- The assessment of the curriculum vitae and other documentation presented is made in according to point 8 of this notice. This component of the evaluation is expressed in a scale of 0 to 100.
- The Jury may interview the first three candidates with higher classification in person or by video conference.
Each member of the jury assigns a classification to each of the candidates on a scale of 0 to 100 points, ranking the candidates according to their classification consisting on the sum of the partial classifications assigned in each evaluation criterion, and considering the weighting factor given to each parameter. In this process abstentions are not allowed.
Candidates shall be ordered by applying the successive voting method.
The jury has the faculty to not approve a candidate who is not considered on absolute merit.
Candidates with an average score below 70, are not recommended for hiring
Minutes of the evaluation panel meeting are drawn up containing a summary of what has taken place in the meeting, as well as the votes cast by each of the members and their reasons, being available to the candidates whenever requested.
The final deliberation of the jury is approved by the President of INESC-ID, and it is his responsibility to establish the respective contract.
9. APPLICATION | SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS
9.1 The application and supporting documents must be submitted via email to contratos@inesc-id.pt, with the documents stated in 9.2 and 9.3.
The application email should clearly state the reference on the subject 2026.015.CTTRI and all documents must be presented in pdf form.
The candidates must indicate his / her consent so that the communications and notifications in the context of this hiring procedure can take place to the electronic address contratos@inesc-id.pt.
The application and documents should be submitted in English.
9.2 Applications are formalised by sending a Motivation Letter, addressed to the Board of INESC ID, including this announcement identification, full name, parents’ names, ID card / passport number and expiration date, taxpayer ID number, date and place of birth, marital status, occupation, residence and contact address, including email address and telephone.
9.3 Applications must include all supported documents referred by point 6 and 7 for call admission, namely:
- Copy of certificate or diploma;
- Two-page (maximum) A4 document describing the 5 most relevant contributions in the last 5 years
- Detailed curriculum vitae, structured in accordance with the items in point 8, and including also relevant identifiers of science, such as for Scholar, Scopus and ORCID.
- Six-page (maximum) A4 document describing the scientific project for the following 5 years proposed by the candidate in the area of the application.
The administrative verification of the recognition of doctoral degrees obtained abroad will be fulfilled for the purpose of contracting, in case of approval of the candidatures.
10. This call is open from September 08 to 22 of 2026.
11. Candidates who submit their application incorrectly or who do not prove the requirements required in this notice are excluded from admission. In case of doubt, the jury may demand any candidate to present documents proving those statements.
12. False statements made by the candidates will be punished according to the law.
13. The admitted and excluded candidates’ applicants will be notified by email of the final ranking list.
14. Prior Hearing and Deadline for Final Decision: After being notified, candidates have 10 working days to submit a formal rebuttal. Within the term of 30 days, counted from the deadline for the presentation of the candidacies, the final decisions of the jury are given.
15. This call is exclusively intended to fill the vacancy (s) indicated and may be terminated until the homologation of the final ranking list of candidates and expiring with the respective occupation of the working position on offer.
