The UH Hilo School of Education serves as a resource to area educators teaching in a culturally rich and diverse setting and conducts as well as guides action research to expand knowledge of teaching and learning, providing high quality, integrated, inquiry-and-place-based undergraduate and graduate programs.
This is a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position with duties that include teaching across multiple programs; advising students; coordinating, supervising and supporting field experiences for candidates; engaging in curriculum development, program assessment and accreditation; engaging in scholarly work and publication; performing service to the institution and discipline; and engaging in partnerships with schools, education agencies, out-of-school-time (OST) programs, and the Hawaii Department of Education. This work requires a deep understanding of issues related to education in rural settings, place-based education, education in the Pacific, and education in formal and informal environments.
Duties
Teach undergraduate and graduate campus-based and web-based courses in teacher education, with an emphasis in literacy education, place-based education, teaching methods, or methods in a related discipline, and other areas as needed and assigned. Advise undergraduate and graduate students. Supervise and support teacher candidates in schools. Coordinate field experiences. Engage in curriculum development, program assessment, and accreditation. Engage in scholarly work and publication. Perform service to the institution and discipline. Engage in partnerships with schools and other community partners, education agencies, out-of-school-time (OST) programs, and the Hawaii Department of Education.
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. or Ed.D. at the time of appointment. A minimum of three years working in formal or informal K-12 education settings. Experience in place-based or culture-based education. Demonstrated ability to teach courses in literacy or a related discipline. Evidence of the ability to establish a productive research agenda or publications.
Desirable Qualifications
Evidence of: Successful experience working in Hawaii K-12 school systems or other school systems with diverse populations. Successful experience with school accreditation or program evaluation. Ability to teach teacher education courses at the elementary level. Experience mentoring, coaching or supervising students. Expertise with education in Oceania.
Pay Range: Commensurate with training and experience.
