Assistant Professor - Mental Health Counseling
The Graduate Mental Health Counseling Program is seeking a NYS licensed/license eligible tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning in the Fall 2027 semester. This position will meet NYS requirements for postdoctoral hours toward licensure. Supervision will be provided. The Graduate Mental Health Counseling Program is a 60-credit professional training program. Graduates of this New York State Education Department Office of Professions (NYSEDOP) licensure qualifying program meet the educational requirements for licensure as a Mental Health Counselor.
Our curriculum is grounded in social justice and committed to training culturally humble clinicians who can meet the growing needs of the diverse Long Island and NYC client population. In addition to these values being evident throughout all our courses, we require students to take two courses specific to the content: a) Psychosocial and Cultural Perspectives, and b) Multicultural Counseling Lab. Our diverse student body is trained to understand and use their intersectional identities in clinically useful ways.
Responsibilities include teaching, student supervision and mentoring, scholarly research/professional development, service to the department, college, and university, and collaboration on program administration. We especially welcome candidates whose professional activities demonstrate a strong commitment to social justice concerns, and who value teaching at a public institution serving a racially, ethnically, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse student population. These commitments are consistent with SUNY Old Westbury's historic mission to advance social justice, civic engagement, and sustainability. The department is strongly committed to faculty diversity, consistent with the mission of the university.
The Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Mental Health Counseling is housed in the Psychology Department, which is the largest undergraduate major at the College, offering a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Psychology. Old Westbury is a comprehensive college in the SUNY system and is one of the country's most culturally and academically diverse campuses. It is located on 604 acres of forested rolling hills on the North Shore of Long Island, less than one hour from New York City.
