Assistant Professor of Art History (Tenure-Track)
The Department of Art and Art History at Southwestern University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in art history to begin in August 2026. We are looking for candidates who can teach the history of European and American modern art from the mid-18th century to the present. The Department is particularly interested in candidates whose teaching and/or research contributes to one or more of Southwestern's interdisciplinary programs, including but not limited to Environmental Studies, Feminist Studies, International Studies, and/or Race and Ethnicity Studies.
We seek a teacher-scholar who shows promise of excellence in both teaching and research. The department encourages applications from candidates with a demonstrated interest in fostering inclusive excellence in the classroom, curricular innovation, and pedagogical creativity.
The teaching load is 5 courses per year. Additional responsibilities include departmental and university committee work, undergraduate student advising, and participation in the University's First Year Seminar program.
The department requires a Ph.D. in the History of Art at the time of appointment. Candidates should submit the following materials to Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/170765 by October 1, 2025:

- one article or chapter-length sample of scholarly writing
- one original syllabus or course description with main readings and assignments
- a list of three references.
Applications should demonstrate a clear commitment to undergraduate teaching at all levels, and provide evidence of a strong research trajectory.
Starting annual salary for 9-month position: $65,000. The final offer for the successful candidate will be commensurate with experience and may exceed this figure. Teaching in Southwestern University summer school provides faculty with an opportunity to supplement their income during the summer months.
