Position: Assistant Professor of Child and Family Studies
Effective Date: August 17, 2026 (Fall Semester)
Salary Range: The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary is $74,652 to $158,688 per year; $6,221 to $13,224 per month (12 monthly payments per academic year). The anticipated hiring range is $91,224 to $99,204 per year; $7,602 to $8,267 per month. Salary offered is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:

• Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Child Development, Family Science, Human Development, or a closely related field. Candidates must have at least one graduate degree in Child Development, Family Science, or a closely related discipline. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2026.
• Demonstrated subject matter expertise in one or more of the following areas:
  • Interdisciplinary work with children and families (e.g., collaborations across education, healthcare, social work, or legal systems to support child and family well-being)
  • Applied child development work with children or adolescents, and their families in educational, clinical, or community-based settings
  • Family science and community-based interventions (e.g., family dynamics, stress and coping, community engagement, child and family lifespan development)
  • Diversity, global, and cross-cultural perspectives on children and families (e.g., multicultural families, international family studies, global childhoods)
  • Research and applied community-based child and family services (e.g., program evaluation, applied research methodologies, community-based partnerships)
  • Issues of child and family law or policy (e.g., public policy, legal frameworks, advocacy, or social services impacting children and families)
• Demonstrated potential for effectiveness in teaching at the undergraduate level
• Demonstrated potential for research, scholarly, and creative activities in the field of child development and family science, or closely related field, resulting in publications
• Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including low socioeconomic and first-generation students

Preferred Qualifications:

• Interest in interdisciplinary collaborations in research, teaching, or service
• Interest in working with children and/or families in community-based or applied settings
• Familiarity with national and state-level standards related to children and/or families
• Experience using instructional technology to enhance teaching and learning
• Experience mentoring students in research and/or professional development
• Experience in program and curriculum development related to child and family studies
• Evidence of a productive program of research in child development and family science, or closely related field
• Demonstrated success in securing internal or external funding
• Experience in conducting and/or teaching research methods, study design, and data analysis relevant to child development and family science
• Demonstrated commitment to teaching or conducting research using inclusive, community-based, or culturally responsive methods
• Experience successfully working with populations demographically and/or socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body
• Demonstrated commitment to supporting students with marginalized identities through mentorship, research, or inclusive pedagogies

Duties:

• Teach courses in, but not limited to, child and family development within the contexts of personal relationships, stress and coping, global perspectives, community settings, parenting, public policy, interdisciplinary collaboration, or research. Additional responsibilities also include internship supervision. (Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.)
• Advise and mentor students in the child and family studies program, with attention to supporting diverse academic and professional pathways
• Participate in curriculum and program development and maintenance
• Maintain a consistent program of research, scholarship, or creative activities leading to peer-reviewed publications, community-based outputs, and/or conference presentations
• Actively engage in professional organizations related to child development and family science
• Serve on program, department, college, and university committees
• Contribute to community partnerships, service-learning initiatives, and/or policy-related engagement

Child and Family Studies is the largest program in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. The Department is home to the Child and Family Center (CFC), a training lab for students in our program that serves students with dependents and children of faculty, staff, and community members with quality child care. The CFC is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The Department is also home to a new Family Resource Center, which provides training opportunities for students aiming for careers in family services and parent education, while serving students with dependents through its programming.
