Assistant Professor of Computer Science
Job Description
Barnard seeks to hire two tenure-track assistant professors in Computer Science for the academic year beginning July 1, 2026.
Barnard is a premier liberal arts undergraduate college for women in New York City affiliated with Columbia University. Barnard's Computer Science (CS) Department works closely with the Vagelos Computational Science Center, with the Columbia CS Department, and with other Barnard faculty. The goals of the department are to enhance the experience of Barnard CS majors through activities that develop community, provide academic support, and connect to CS-related opportunities outside the classroom; to serve all Barnard students by expanding the use of computation and data analysis across disciplines, through both curricular offerings and other programming such as workshops or support for computational labs associated with courses in other departments; and to advance the state of the art in CS, through research, curricular and pedagogical advances in CS and its multidisciplinary applications, and new models for engaging students and enhancing diversity in computing.
Barnard faculty are expected to engage in teaching, research, curriculum and program development, undergraduate advising, and mentoring of undergraduate research. There are also opportunities to collaborate with faculty and students across Barnard College and at Columbia. We are seeking candidates who work in the following areas: Artificial Intelligence, including but not limited to Machine Learning, Responsible AI, and Computer Vision; Theoretical Computer Science, including Algorithms, Algorithmic Fairness, Game Theory, and Learning Theory; Systems and Networking, including Databases and Mobile Applications; and Data Science. Within those areas, we encourage candidates who take a broad approach to computing--including "computing for good," connections across multiple subareas of computer science, and research connections to another discipline. Successful hires will further the aims and vision of the CS department and will embody strategic strengths for this growing program.
