Job Description Summary:

The LaFetra College of Education (LFCE) at the University of La Verne invites applications for a 10-month, full time, tenure track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor of Teacher Education. Screening of applications begins immediately and continues until the position is filled.

As a Hispanic Serving Institution, our current needs are for faculty with expertise in one or more of the following high impact and high need areas: multiple subject education; clinical fieldwork; bilingual education; ethnic studies.

We seek a colleague with a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in their interactions, teaching practices, leadership, and community engagement. Salary and rank are dependent upon qualifications and professional experience. The successful applicant for this position will teach within the credential program, preferably in relation to teacher preparation in multiple subject and single subject programs, with an emphasis on preparing teachers to support diverse learners and inclusive classroom environments.

Established in 1891, the University of La Verne is an independent, nonprofit, comprehensive, doctoral granting institution in Southern California founded on the university’s core values of leadership, caring, excellence, and diversity. The University is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution with 40 percent of the student population identifying as Hispanic or Latino, 55 percent students of color, 10 percent international students, and a large proportion of first generation students. All programs have high retention and graduation rates for underrepresented minorities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in education with an emphasis on leadership or education.
  • Ability to work with diverse students and colleagues, success in creating inclusive classrooms and environments, and knowledge and experience with a variety of teaching methods and curricular perspectives.
  • Teaching credentials and a minimum of three years of teaching experience in a PK-12 educational setting.
  • Ability to teach and mentor a diverse student population in face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats.
  • Understanding of effective instructional practices and educator preparation.
  • Understanding of California teacher credential processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated evidence of leadership experience and interest in contributing to program coordination or leadership within the Teacher Education program.
  • Evidence of successful teaching in higher education.
  • Demonstrated evidence of working for social justice and equity for learners.
  • Knowledge of linguistically and culturally responsive practices grounded in principles of equity.
  • Experience teaching higher education courses or working with adult learners.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring educators in PK -12 settings.
  • Ability to develop effective partnerships with community stakeholders and colleagues across various disciplines.
  • Knowledge of and experience with collaboration using a strengths based equity minded approach with colleagues in the workplace and in education settings.

Specific Duties:

Program Responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the ongoing development, coordination, and implementation of courses and program initiatives within the Teacher Education Credential Program, including coursework supporting multiple subject and single subject teacher preparation.
  • Teach afternoon and evening courses in both in-person and online formats.
  • Collaborate with Teacher Education faculty to advance program priorities, initiatives, and collaborative projects that support candidate success.
  • Engage in the review, assessment, and continuous improvement of program curriculum, instructional practices, and candidate outcomes.
  • Maintain high standards of disciplinary expertise and teaching effectiveness through ongoing professional development and engagement with current research and best practices in teacher education.
  • Participate in program planning, evaluation, and related activities that support the continued growth and effectiveness of the Teacher Education Credential Program.

Percentage of Time: 50%

Student Centered Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Advise students from beginning to end of the graduate program with a focus on support and retention of all students.
  • Support students in clinical fieldwork, student teaching, and internships.
  • Support regional faculty, adjuncts, and university supervisors.
  • Attend regional meetings in the community and with local districts to promote and represent the university.
  • Participate in college related activities such as registration, student retention, and faculty selection.
  • Maintain posted office hours, electronic communication, schedule appointments as needed, and respond to inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Evaluate student work constructively and provide timely feedback.
  • Review, evaluate, and recommend student learning materials.
  • Review, evaluate, and revise teaching methods through a self-evaluation and reflection process.
  • Develop and use a syllabus and course information material for each course within the university learning management system.
  • Plan, develop, and use effective teaching methods and materials which are appropriate for students with diverse educational and experiential backgrounds and engage students in learning.
  • Contribute to advancing the goals of the department and university including a focus on student achievement, supporting diversity, and fostering community engagement.
  • Maintain high standards of competence in the discipline and teaching methodologies through professional development activities.
  • Meet or exceed professional standards, APA mandated guidelines, and discipline specific requirements as appropriate.
  • Participate in activities required to maintain program accreditation standards as well as professional organizations as appropriate.
  • Contribute to programs and activities that support departmental goals.
  • Participate in full regalia in official graduation ceremonies.

Percentage of Time: 50%

Salary Range

Maximum: $75,865.17
Minimum: $72,860.91

The offered wage or salary is only one aspect of an employee’s total compensation
