Assistant Professor of Educational Studies - Literacy Studies
The Department of Educational Studies at Swarthmore College invites applications for a tenure track position in Literacy Studies at the Assistant Professor level, beginning in fall 2026.
Teaching responsibilities include two courses per term and thesis supervision. Typical courses include the department’s introductory course, supervision of student teachers, an upper level honors seminar in Literacies, an intermediate level course associated with the applicant’s research focus, and the two-credit Curriculum and Methods Seminar that accompanies student teaching.
The successful applicant will maintain an active research program that includes opportunities for student collaboration. Candidates should have developed knowledge of PK-16 reading and writing instruction, with specializations in structured literacy, adolescent literacy, digital literacies, or content-area and disciplinary literacy encouraged.
This position requires institutional and departmental service, including attendance at meetings, events, committee service, and department chairing post-tenure. Faculty also serve as advisors and supervise senior theses.
The Department of Educational Studies is collaborative and interdisciplinary, employing qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methodologies to examine educational research, policy, theory, pedagogy, and practices. It offers majors in educational studies and partnered majors, with opportunities for teacher certification. Research and fieldwork are key components.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Literacy Studies or a related discipline with post-doctoral research experience.
- K-12 teaching experience, preferably at the middle school or secondary level.
- Commitment to teaching and mentoring diverse undergraduate students.
- A program of innovative and impactful research with potential for growth.
