INTRODUCTION

The Department of English at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) seeks applicants for a tenure track position at the level of Assistant Professor starting July 1, 2025

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should have completed a doctoral degree in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, or its equivalent by the start of the appointment. Teaching, research experience, and publications are expected. Knowledge of Spanish is recommended. Preferred areas of expertise include a combination of Syntax, Pragmatics, Semantics, and Psycholinguistics. The candidate should also be able to teach theory and applied methods, work with inferential statistics, and demonstrate an ability to program that is appropriate to the standards of research in the discipline. Candidates whose teaching and research interests explore frameworks such as approaches in psycholinguistics to language acquisition, experimental syntax, and language processing are particularly welcome to apply. In addition, the applicant must be a native or near-native speaker of English.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

Responsibilities include teaching courses in Syntax, Semantics, and Psycholinguistics to our general student population and to students completing the bachelor’s degree in English, as well as graduate courses in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics for students completing the master’s degree in English Education. Candidates should demonstrate adequate skills in educational technologies in the teaching-learning process. They are expected to demonstrate the ability to conduct research and publish in their areas of specialization; to develop proposals seeking external funding; to teach basic, intermediate and advanced courses in their area of specialization; to participate actively in departmental committees, projects, and research at the undergraduate and graduate level. This appointment involves an academic task equivalent to 12 credit hours, which are distributed between teaching, research and institutional services for 37.5 hours a week.
