Assistant Professor of English
INTRODUCTION
The English Department at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez is seeking candidates for a tenure-track position in the areas of cinematography and post-production or animation and visual effects. The starting date is January 1, 2026.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must have a conferred PhD or MFA degree in one of the following areas: cinematography, post-production, animation or visual effects. In addition, the candidate must have two or more years of teaching experience in areas related to cinematography, post-production, animation and/or visual effects; prior experience in film production demonstrated by original creative products (short films, documentaries, animated shorts, etc.); and competencies in the use of information and communication technologies required for teaching university courses in face-to-face, hybrid, and online modalities. Demonstrated ability to develop external funding proposals for creative projects and research and to teach in both English and Spanish are also required.
PREFERRED AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION
The preferred areas of specialization include post-production, animation, sound design, visual effects design, color correction and grading. Candidates with prior creative work on production, design and editing of various types of animation (2D, 3D, etc.), and the use of Blender or Maya Software will be given priority consideration.
JOB DESCRIPTION AND TASKS
Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in post-production, animation, sound design, visual effects design, and, if necessary, film studies and creative writing in English. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out research and creative works in their areas of specialization while disseminating their work in national and international academic and artistic forums. The candidate will also collaborate in the organization of film festivals and screenings for the UPRM community, the Mayagüez community, and neighboring areas. The candidate must provide mentoring to undergraduate UPRM students, especially those enrolled in the Film Certificate and any other film program developed in the future.
