Position Summary

The Communication and Media Studies Department at SUNY Cortland invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Media Production. This position will teach and assess learning in the practice of media production, with a primary emphasis on digital media production.

This is a generalist position designed to attract candidates with diverse professional and creative backgrounds across media production. Applicants are encouraged to identify their primary area(s) of expertise within their application materials. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to:

  • Audio production for digital film and video
  • Radio, podcasting, and audio storytelling
  • Live television and studio broadcast
  • Digital video production and post-production
  • Multimedia journalism and emerging media formats

The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate instruction, curricular development, student mentoring, creative and/or scholarly activity, and service to the department, university, and community, and interest in innovative, interdisciplinary, or evolving media practices.

Major Responsibilities

SUNY Cortland's Communication and Media Studies Department is a nationally recognized, high-value program committed to inclusive education and experiential learning. The department provides students with hands-on opportunities through internships, study abroad, and student-run media organizations, including campus radio, television, and newspaper outlets.

In 2026, the department will move into a newly renovated facility with expanded production, studio, and post-production spaces.

Teaching
The successful candidate will teach a range of media production courses. Potential subject areas may include (but are not limited to):

  • Introduction to Media Production
  • Audio and/or video production for digital platforms
  • Broadcast, studio, or live media production
  • Special topics in media production, cinema, or emerging media

The department encourages faculty to develop courses aligned with their professional strengths while supporting the evolving needs of the program.

Scholarship / Creative Activity
Maintain a sustained and productive program of research, scholarship, and/or creative professional activity appropriate for a tenure-track appointment.

Service

  • Engage in service to the department, school, university, and community.
  • Maintain regular office hours as required.
  • Provide academic advising and mentoring to students.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

  • Reports to the Department Chair.
  • Works collaboratively with departmental faculty and staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (Ph.D. or MFA) in media production, communication, film, digital media, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in media production, with a focus on digital formats.
  • Evidence of professional practice, creative work, or applied research in one or more areas of media production.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College-level teaching experience.
  • Professional experience in one or more areas of digital media production.
  • Ability to contribute across multiple areas of the curriculum (e.g., audio, video, broadcast, cinema, or emerging media).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to teach undergraduate students in a hands-on, production-oriented curriculum.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Cultural competence.
  • Commitment to working collaboratively and collegially with others.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
