The Hampton University Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications invites applications for the full-time position of assistant professor focused on research in journalism and communications, beginning Aug. 19, 2024.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution.

The Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications is the result of more than 50 years of mass media-related instruction at Hampton University. Founded in 2002, the school emphasizes excellence and innovation, while adhering to the core standards and ethical principles of the industry. The program services more than 200 majors in journalism and strategic communication. The curriculum encompasses the professional values and essential competencies enumerated by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant Professor of Research is a full-time faculty member in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications. The successful candidate should have a clear research background in communications. This faculty member will promote the importance of research among the school's faculty. The Scripps Howard School especially desires candidates who can perform media-based research that can illuminate industry trends and/or show industry needs. Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Teaching the school's undergraduate media research class.
  • Teaching a 2/2 load, with a two-course release provided for the faculty member to complete and disseminate research.
  • Representing the school as research lead, coordinating efforts in developing and advancing research.
  • Leading the school's efforts in developing grant applications for research.
  • Participating in research information forums and projects under the direction of the university's vice president for research.
  • Participating in the development and assessment of student learning.
  • Advising students.

Requirements

The ideal candidate must possess at least a master's degree in journalism or communications preferably from an R1 institution. The successful candidate should have a successful track record of presenting and/or publishing research related to journalism or communications in academic or professional venues. Ideally, the candidate will have professional experience in a communication-related field (public relations, marketing, advertising, journalism, etc.).

Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess the following skill set:

  • Experience in research, external fundraising and grant writing.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • A high level of energy and initiative.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Willingness to support a diverse population of learners.
  • Ability to work in a participatory and collegial setting, managing multiple projects effectively.
  • A collaborative and congenial spirit
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Capability to adapt to new technologies
