Job Description:

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Binghamton University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Spanish specializing in Golden Age literature. We seek a scholar whose research and teaching focus on Spanish literature of the sixteenth and/or seventeenth centuries and who can contribute broadly to our undergraduate and graduate curriculum in Spanish literature and culture.

The successful candidate will be prepared to teach courses in Golden Age literature, including works by major authors such as Miguel de Cervantes, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Garcilaso de la Vega, Luis de Góngora, Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, and Francisco de Quevedo. Scholars whose research and teaching extend into Medieval Spanish literature or Transatlantic Studies are especially encouraged to apply. We particularly welcome candidates whose work engages literature through interdisciplinary approaches or across historical periods. The position calls for a scholar who will bring new perspectives to the study of Spanish literature and demonstrates innovative approaches to teaching that engage students and connect the study of earlier periods to contemporary intellectual and cultural questions. The teaching load for this position is two Spanish courses per semester.

The Department of Romance Languages consists of 30 faculty members across Spanish, French, and Italian. Our department teaches more than 1,000 students each semester and offers a variety of extracurricular programs for additional exposure to language and culture outside the classroom. Students can major or minor in any of our languages. Our Spanish division also offers three distinct courses for heritage speakers of the language. Within Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, Spanish is the second most commonly declared minor among students. We offer a range of graduate options, including 4+1 and traditional Master of Arts degrees in each of our languages, as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching in Spanish and French. Our faculty regularly collaborate with other units on campus, including the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, the Translation Research and Instruction Program, the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program, and the Linguistics Program. Additional information about the Department is available at https://www.binghamton.edu/romance/

Binghamton University is dedicated to advancing equity and inclusion, and in particular to the goal of building a diverse and inclusive teaching, research, and working environment, including a diverse faculty. Evidence of a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service will be valued. Potential applicants who share this goal, especially members of groups historically underrepresented in the field and those from non-traditional backgrounds, women, and persons with disabilities, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Spanish or a related discipline by August 16, 2027
  • An active research agenda within Spanish Golden Age literature, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications or work in progress
