Job Description
The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Binghamton University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Spanish specializing in Golden Age literature. We seek a scholar whose research and teaching focus on Spanish literature of the sixteenth and/or seventeenth centuries and who can contribute broadly to our undergraduate and graduate curriculum in Spanish literature and culture.
The successful candidate will be prepared to teach courses in Golden Age literature, including works by major authors such as Miguel de Cervantes, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Garcilaso de la Vega, Luis de Góngora, Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, and Francisco de Quevedo. Scholars whose research and teaching extend into Medieval Spanish literature and Transatlantic Studies are especially encouraged to apply. We particularly welcome candidates whose work engages literature through interdisciplinary approaches or across historical periods. The position calls for a scholar who will bring new perspectives to the study of Spanish literature and demonstrates innovative approaches to teaching that engage students and connect the study of earlier periods to contemporary intellectual and cultural questions. The teaching load for this position is two Spanish courses per semester.
The Department of Romance Languages consists of 30 faculty members across Spanish, French, and Italian. Our department teaches more than 1,000 students each semester and offers a variety of extracurricular programs for additional exposure to language and culture outside the classroom. Students can major or minor in any of our languages. Our Spanish division also offers three distinct courses for heritage speakers of the language. Within Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, Spanish is the second most commonly declared minor among students. We offer a range of graduate options, including 4+1 and traditional Master of Arts degrees in each of our languages, as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching in Spanish and French. Our faculty regularly collaborate with other units on campus, including the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, the Translation Research and Instruction Program, the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program, and the Linguistics Program. History
Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946, to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. Originally located in Endicott, N.Y., five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University.
Four years later, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who helped settle the area west of Binghamton.
In 1961, the campus moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollment and a reputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system.
In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as our informal name.
