Assistant Professor or Researcher in Quantitative Methodology

Solid and reliable science is required to produce evidence for better animal health, animal welfare, and a more sustainable production of animal derived proteins (milk, eggs, meat), as well as to further our understanding of the many challenges that animals face in their environment and in their interaction with humans and human society. The support of you as a quantitative expert is essential to appreciate, produce and valuate new evidence, insight and methodology for veterinary medicine.

Your job

We are looking for an enthusiastic scientist with a strong quantitative background, who shares these views and can help us to collectively (as scientists, veterinarians, students and support staff) contribute to achieving these ambitions at a high scientific standard. This position can be offered as an Assistant Professor for candidates with a PhD, or as a researcher/lecturer for candidates with an MSc degree.

In this role, you bring in new ideas and develop quantitative methods and apply those in collaborative projects with colleagues within the epidemiology team of Farm Animal Health (consisting of epidemiologists, veterinarians, economists, mathematical modellers and biostatisticians), and the wider department of Population Health Sciences. You acquire research funding from national or European sources that enables you to further develop quantitative methods for the animal health domain. You make your insights on novel developments accessible for staff and students through consultancy on research methodology, data analysis and advanced statistics. This consultancy often takes the form of collaboration in research projects and publications. Finally, you will actively contribute to teaching and examining existing courses at BSc, MSc, and PhD level.

Requirements

You have a Bachelor's degree in mathematics, and a Master's degree or (preferably) a PhD in statistics, data science, or artificial intelligence.

You have broad knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative methods, and the expertise to apply these in biomedical studies.

You are able to acquire research funding for projects that focus on further developing quantitative methods in biomedical sciences.

You communicate effectively, both in the context of interaction with students and with colleagues.

You have good programming skills, preferably (also) in R.

You have experience in lecturing in statistical methods.

You are fluent in English and preferably Dutch, or you are willing to acquire Dutch proficiency within a reasonable time.

A university teaching qualification (BKO) is required. If you do not yet have this certificate, you are expected to enroll in the BKO-course of the university to obtain this within a reasonable time.

Conditions of employment

A position for 12 months, with the prospect of permanent employment following a positive assessment; a working week of 28 - 40 hours and a gross monthly salary between €3,546 and €5,538 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale 10-11 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU)); 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus; a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.

In addition to the terms of employment laid down in the CAO NU, Utrecht University also offers a range of its own schemes for employees. This includes arrangements for professional development, various types of leave, and options for sports and cultural activities. You can also tailor your employment conditions through our Terms of Employment Options Model. In this way, we encourage you to keep investing in your personal and professional development.
